27. Alex Whisker

Full Name:Alex Whisker
Playing Position (s):Full Back, winger...anywhere in the backs!!!
Playing Years at Selby:1989-2005
Other teams:Just Selby
Where are you now?Living in York
What did you enjoy about playing at Selby? So many things, the friends I made, the good laughs from junior rugby, colts to open age group, the USA tour, the dream team that scored over 1,000 in one season. All the other clubs you played at, never really had the same feeling Selby did, friendly, well organised and had decent pitches, well apart from the Corn Field!!!!!
What did playing rugby teach you?To enjoy the sport. Considering I played a whole host of other sports, its the discipline that has stuck with me.
You need to take a road trip but must take 3 of your team mates with you. Who would they be?DB - guaranteed a laugh! Les Broadhead - the unexpected always happened with him! Rob Wood - he organised some right parties!
Who would still come with you, without question? My brother Ben ?
Who was the Selby dressing room joker?Lee Woods, Les Broadhead and some of the other generation, who weren't as forgiving with there jokes!
Favourite player you’ve watched at Selby:Jim Nicholson - he made the game look so easy at times. His work rate was unreal.
Who would be first to the bar and last to leave?Stel or Daz or Rob Wood or Lee Woods!
Why Selby RUFC?Brian Walker from Burn Fencing knew my Dad (Ron) and said your lad should come down and try it out
Best match you’ve played in?Probably a third team game at Beverley. We won by quite a lot. My brother was playing stand off and I was on the wing. We scored the vast majority of the points that game. Was a great game to play in, open expansive rugby at it's best!
Most memorable moment:On the USA tour, well so many on them. The playing one coming on as sub, hungover to hell at full back. Took a high catch, kicked the ball into touch, it all happened in slow motion. Never played that pissed before! As I was a tour virgin, been made to eat chilli powder at 7am in the morning. The strip clubs! Oh, my first Colts Dinner at 15! Had all my clothes nicked, made to run naked and carry out drinking games! Brilliant!
Funniest think you’ve seen on a rugby pitch:Les Broadhead, his warm up consisted of (after a night out) a fag, a small drink of alcohol and a light jog. First tackle he collapsed! I think this was in the under and over 30's game!
Who/what do you miss the most?I miss the camaraderie, the dressing room before and after the match. Some of the best years of my life were at Selby
Favourite quote or words of wisdom:John Goodhead...just get some aggression in you young lad...next time I got the ball, I ran through a wall of forwards and scored. Since then, it changed my game so much.
Lockdown perception:Fine, using the time wisely! Hoping I'm scoring enough points to start playing again!
