What did you enjoy about playing at Selby?in my day, it was a rugby club of 2 teams, 2nd team going away sometimes with 12/13 players travelling by sykes of camblesforth buses. enjoyable after game few pints talking and mixing with the opposition, making good friends. back to the londesborough arms for a few more pints. my house master at drax mr Jackson became walter. he was the club secretary for 50 years, my secretary when I was chairman of committee. Maureen magee getting a drinks licence for the club, and being one of the first barmen with George hanson. we only sold bottled beer in those days in our ex nissen hut club house. those were very happy days.
What did playing rugby teach you?friendship, discipline, respect ,fitness, honesty and a work ethic for your club on a voluntary basis.
You need to take a road trip but must take 3 of your team mates with you. Who would they be?most of my team-mates are no longer with us, and in those days I could not afford a car.
Who would still come with you, without question?see above
Who was the Selby dressing room joker?none that I remember, just good friends and mates.
Favourite player you’ve watched at Selby:Cannot name only one, all that I played with ,refereed and watched at Selby, some were better than others, but always played as a team.
Who would be first to the bar and last to leave?me or george (and Maureen) working behind it.cannot name
Why Selby RUFC?Walter Jackson
Best match you’ve played in?most of them
Most memorable moment:moments. playing in both unders and overs 30s and refereeing several matches. refereeing the first 5 or 6 mini rugby festivals in the Gordon potts and tony redfern days when they started the mini rugby at the club.
Funniest think you’ve seen on a rugby pitch:a Selby player losing a lens (before most people had heard of them) the game stopping, and everyone on hands and knees looking for it. I do believe it was found. looking for a needle in a haystack comes to mind.
Who/what do you miss the most?cameraderie, and the club feeling like a rugby club.
Favourite quote or words of wisdom:if you put the work in you will get a winning result out
Lockdown perception:very well, we have good neighbours, a large garden, vegs are sown and through, soon to be ready for hardening off and then planting. lawns to cut, edge, hedges to cut. its all about exercise, tilling cutting and planting. not to forget redecorating in the house, even at my wifes and my age. now both over 80.
