23. Mark Randerson

Full Name:Mark 'Rambo' Randerson
Playing Position (s):Scrum-half and occasional Fly-half for a laugh!
When did you first play at Selby?2003'ish
Have you hung up your boots yet? If so when?I actually hung up my boots before playing for Selby, as I had a car crash in 2003 and struggled with my back and hamstrings. But with lots of warming up and not too much running around, I managed to get a couple of extra seasons for Selby before I played my first and last game at the age of 41 for the vets. The combination of broken ribs (twice) and the birth of my twins was the final sign I should retire!
Other teams:Rotherham (Div 4 up to the Championship), Newcastle, Hull Ionians, York, Hull and ER, Roundhay, Bro Festiniog, Surrey and Newcastle Univ, and a few representative teams
Where are you now?At home in Saxton
What did you enjoy about playing at Selby?Good bunch of lads, very welcoming. Some good players and we even managed to win the Yorkshire vets tournament in 2003 at York.
What did playing rugby teach you?1) Not to drink with the forwards and 2) How to boss big blokes around without getting punched .... not too often anyway!
You need to take a road trip but must take 3 of your team mates with you. Who would they be?The three who drink the least, so I am not the biggest lightweight!
Who would still come with you, without question?Paul 'Scotty' Scott.... any excuse for a beer and getting away from his missus!
Who was the Selby dressing room joker?Usually the referee, I think you know what I mean
Favourite player you’ve watched at Selby:Boo, not just a great player, but his enthusiasm for playing rugby as long as he could was infectious
Who would be first to the bar and last to leave? The Props, it's the same at every club I have ever played at.
Why Selby RUFC?It's just a proper rugby club
Best match you’ve played in?Beating Leeds (just after the merger between Roundhay and Headingley) in my league debut for Rotherham which turned out to be the reason we were promoted and they missed out.
Most memorable moment:Scoring the winning try for Rotherham against Leeds, it was a pretty good one, even if I say so myself!! And strangely gets better as I grow older? Stuart Lancaster was just one of the players I left on his backside!
Funniest think you’ve seen on a rugby pitch:A streaker at a Rotherham game in the middle of winter, getting stuck on the icy metal railings, as he was trying to get on the pitch.... Oh dear!
Who/what do you miss the most?Just playing rugby, watching and coaching does not come close.
Favourite quote or words of wisdom:A coach told me, 'I noticed your defence improved a lot when you got everyone else to do your tackling'
Lockdown perception:No point being negative, Make the most of it!
