Malton hosted Selby U13s for last Sunday’s fixture. Selby started promisingly, taking the ball cleanly from the kick-off, passing across the backs to full-back Ollie Uren who sprinted down the touch-line to score. A second try quickly followed as the Selby forwards won possession from a counter-ruck, Joseph Styrin punched through the Malton defence, off-loading to Noah Callou to score. Malton replied with a try of their own from a penalty but Selby countered almost instantly – Ollie Uren taking the ball cleanly from the re-start and running, from deep, through the entire Malton defence for an extremely impressive solo try. Uren then performed the feat again from the next re-start to score his hat-trick. Another away-team try came just before half-time; Hedley Benn-Harris collecting the ball from a ruck, dodging through the Malton defenders and off-loading a perfectly-timed pass to Sam Perrin to score. Selby started the second half just as strongly; Hooker Alex Whitehead scoring after powering over the line following a Selby lineout. Malton rallied to an extent and after some frantic Selby defending were awarded a scrum on the 5m line from which they put another 5 points on the board. Ollie Uren, however, put the game beyond doubt with two more excellent tries, the first another solo effort, the second made by a strong run from Noah Dobson, offloading to Uren who touched down and so scored his second hat-trick of the game – also kicking six conversions in the process. Malton touched down another try just as the game ended but the day belonged to Selby who gave probably their best performance of the season. Particular mention should go to Ollie Uren, who surpassed even his own usual high standard, to the “Tight Five” in the forwards who were dominant in rucks and scrums, and to Miles Loveday and Hayden Smith who agreed to play for Malton in the first and second half respectively. Man of the Match was Alex Whitehead.
