Selby Under 11s first match of the new year was at home again Ripon with the wind blowing a gale.

Game 1 - Selby A v Ripon A
The first half saw neither side able to find the try line but Selby did put some good tackle in through Thomas Gable, Jack Riodan, and Robert Ross. Selby kept the passes short which stopped the wind carrying the ball away and drives were made through Finley Spalding. With most of the game played in the middle of the pitch with much to-ing and throwing the first half was uneventful with Ripon having the better of what action there was.
Half Time Selby A 0 – Ripon A 0

Although Selby did well at keeping Ripon at bay Selby again but good tackle in though Jack Riodan and Finley Spalding. The deadlock was broken after a scrum which saw Ripon with the ball and they found the try line. Ripon again soon found the try line for a second time after Selby lost the ball and allowed Ripon sight of the line. This was a game that saw Selby on the back foot and has they hadn’t woken up.

Game 2 - Selby B v Ripon B
Both sides started strongly with Selby being the first to nearly score after a good run from Matthew Francis who was blocked from reaching the line tried to make a short pass to Ben Abram’s but unfortunately the wind took the ball a little too far and the ball was lost. It wasn’t long before Selby found the line after a pass from Theo to Josh Ginty who made a run and drive down the last third of the pitch and grounded the ball. Selby continued to work well in the rucks with Sam Llewellyn, Zac Cicero and Tom Scholefield. Ripon pulled the scoring level after the ball went loose which the picked up and found a gap to run through our defence. Selby nearly scored again after a good series of passes between Tom Scholefield to Matthew Francis and to Ella Parsonage and back again but a pass forward short of the line gave Ripon back the ball. This saw Ripon offload the ball to their quickest player who ran the length of the pitch and go into half time in the lead.
Half Time Selby B 5 – Ripon B 10

The second half saw good rucking continue from the Selby team. Selby equalised the score after a series movements that started from passes between Ben Abrams to Josh Ginty and to Oliver Alterske who was tackled, from the ruck the ball was passed from Ben Abrams out to Matthew Francis, Josh Ginty and onto Sam Llewellyn who was pushed into touch just short of the try line. From the line out Selby won the ball which got passed to Tom Scholefield making the short run to ground the ball. Ripon responded almost straightaway when the ball went loose and made a run down the wing. Selby sensing the game was nearly over responded straight back and from a scrum Ben Abrams passed to Matthew Francis and onto Tom Scholefield and again grounded the ball over the line, ending the game in a draw. This was a game that either side could have won.

Game 3 - Selby B v Ripon A
It didn’t take long for Selby to get into this game and after the ball was won in the ruck by Matthew Francis and passed to Ella Parsonage and onto Zac Cicero who drove the ball the last 5 metres and over the line to open the score. Ripon came at Selby from the restart and soon equalised. The team were working well together and saw good runs down the wings before being halted in their stride by Ripon. In the last play before half time after some hard fought rucks Selby were just short of the line and with a drive from Matthew Francis he managed to ground the ball and go into half time ahead.

In the second half Selby was winning most of the rucks with Sam Llewellyn, Zac Cicero and Oliver Alterske, but Ripon managed to find some space and again ran down the wing to equalise. Selby hit back and scored after a scrum and pass out to Tom Scholefield who ran a third of the pitch to score. Again Ripon fought back and equalised the score. Selby continued to ruck well and after a pass from Tom Scholefeld to Ella Parsonage who drove the ball over the line but Ripon managed to hold the ball up to prevent Selby taking the lead. This seemed to be the turning point of the game and Selby lost their way and allowed Ripon to take control which saw them score twice in quick succession. This game was lost not from lack of effort in the drive forward, the scrums or the rucking but on missing tackles which saw them making the runs down the wings. The game ended with Ripon winning against the run of play.

Game 4 - Selby A v Ripon B
Selby started the brighter of the 2 sides and with most of the action in the centre and to the right hand side saw good progress up the field through Brett Howden and Thomas Gable. In the rare occasions that Ripon had the ball good tackling came from Jack Riodan and Eddie Liddle. The opening try came from a pass by Brett Howden to Harry Barlow who made a short run side stepping several Ripon players to score. Selby continued to put pressure on Ripon through short runs from Robert Ross, Brett Howden and Thomas Gable and went into half time in the lead.
Half Time Selby A 5 – Ripon B 0

The second half continued the same has the first with Selby piling on the pressure to Ripon and saw runs down the sides from Harry Barlow, Harvey Catling and Eddie Liddle. Selby mixed up there play and swapped players from one side to the other. This resulted in the second try when from the ruck Melissa Howden grabbed the ball and has she was tackled on the line managed to ground the ball over the line. Ripon again saw little of the ball in the second half. The third try came when Matthew Harrison dodging several players and proceeded to have a short run, before side stepping again though Ripons players to score. This ended the game with Selby the deserved winners.
