Selby travelled to Ripon to face the team who beat them so narrowly in the final last year in bouyant and optimistic mood, on the back of an impressive season. There was, however, to be no fairytale ending, as the pace and skills of their rivals proved to be a nightmare for the valiant Swans, who fought bravely to the end.
With Boro fielding a massive pack, it looked as though, it was here that the Thirds would be undone, but they more than held their own up front, but the opposition had a class back row, and were extremely solid in defence in the centres.
Selby worked hard to secure possession, but the Teesiders had their game plan in order and at every opportunity the ball went quickly out to their fleet footed wingers, Connors & Crooks, who simply outstripped the defence and shared four tries between them, with the full back Cheetham kicking three goals to leave Selby 22-0 behind at half time.

A rout seemed on the cards as the elusive centre Twist, danced through the defence in a run which was just too hot for Selby to handle, but with all the team working their socks off, they managed a period of pressure on the Boro line, although a resilient defence denied them any reward, and withh the game ebbing away and Selby’s reserves draining, Boro looked dangerous to the end and a final score by Lairs left the game with a final score of 36 unanswered points to Middlesboro.
Selby should congratulate themselves in reaching this final and it was no disgrace to lose to a side from a couple of leagues higher, fielding a very useful team.
