Selby progressed to the final of the North Yorkshire Trophy for the second consecutive year after this emphatic win against local rivals York. The visitors were first out of the blocks with an unconverted try coming soon after the kick off. This score inspired Selby who where led forward by the enigmatic Hambrecht who has been a real marvel since losing nine stone on the Aitkin’s diet. The Swans took the lead with in minutes after a sublime passing movement involving several players put Watson over the try line in the corner. The difficult conversion was successfully kicked by Moore.
Wass scored the next Selby try after some good play from the forwards. The half came to a close with York kicking a penalty goal which took the score to 12 – 8.
Selby began to dominate in every area in the second half with Copperwheat having an instant impact on the scrum, and a York prop with Eggy on his face with Wass and Weston out jumping their rivals in the line outs.
The backs also took charge as they looked dangerous every time they got the ball and defended brilliantly. Nevertheless it took a full 20 minutes of Selby pressure to unlock the York defence with Howley touching down from a trademark rolling mall. Moore again converting. Weston then barged his way over with numerous would be tacklers laying in his wake. The game was concluded with a Moore penalty in front of the posts putting the game out of reach of a battling York team.
One of the opposition thought they had played Selby 2nd team, if only they had, they may have stood a better chance because with this team in the form they are, they could match anybody. The whole team played excellently and deserve to be in the April 4th final.
