Selby’s third string in local derby action grabbing a well earned away win in a hastily convened friendly at close neighbours Knottingley

This was fine match played at a ferocious pace. There was a good balance of youth & experience on display in a Selby team which delivered a cracking win to secure home and away victories over their closest neighbours.
The Swans opened the scoring as early as the 8th minute with Aiden Pearce putting the finishing touches to a ferocious burst by Ben Spence before Knottingley bounced straight back with their robust pack rumbling up to and over Selby’s line from the restart to restore the status quo.
Again the restart provided a try with the ball having been secured from the kick and swung out wide before Adam Roberts cut inside to dot down under the posts making Leigh Adamson’s kick a formality
Spence, instrumental in both opening tries, took an opportunity to further extend Selby’s lead on the half hour finishing off a good burst by Adam Lee, Adamson stroking over the extras.
With half time looming Lee backed himself against a back peddling Knottingley defence to touch down and allow Adamson to sign off the first half’s proceedings.
Turning around 21 points up Selby could have been forgiven for thinking the afternoon’s proceedings had become a mere walk in the park. Knottingley had other ideas however unsettling the Swans with their physicality and running in two converted tries. Steve Knowles being left in a pile of twisted limbs and needed extended treatment on the side-lines to re-locate and click things back into place.
The rough stuff was just the wake-up call Selby needed however and leading the charge was Adam Lee, now operating at prop to cover the slot vacated by the ailing Knowles. Lee hit back with two unstoppable bursts through Knottingley’s floundering rear-guard to grab a rare forward’s hat-trick and set up a manic finale that saw John Taylor cast off the shackles and grab himself a late brace. Adamson converting two of the last four tries
This performance was courtesy of outstanding performances in Selby’s pack with Venables, Williams, Lewis and Blaymire all putting in massive shifts. Continuity was provided care of the inspired handling and running of Townend, Goodwin, Pierce and Taylor
It’s a return to league action next week where Moortown await ready to provide a testing encounter.
