The short trip up the A1 to Grange Park, Wetherby, was the destination for Selby's first league fixture of the season. The team sheet was full of familiar names, with new signing Lucian Letorey the only newcomer, named on the bench.

The game started scrappily, with both sides conceding penalties and knock-ons common. Wetherby scored first: a penalty for a deliberate knock-on was kicked to the corner, and a routine catch and drive put the hosts' forwards over. It was the first of five tries Wetherby scored this way during the game.

A fortunate bounce then gave Wetherby a second try in the left corner. The ball sat up high infield and a catch and pop pass sent the winger over.

The Swans hit back. Charlie Bramley carried into the 22, Dan Reid came across from the right wing and jinked towards the line, and scrum half Harry Clarke linked with Antun Wilson, who powered over just left of the posts. Oli Parsonage converted to make it 10-7 to the hosts.

That was Parsonage's last contribution. He had looked dangerous running from deep, making incisive breaks, but went off injured shortly afterwards and was replaced by Letorey.

Wetherby missed a chance when a pass went loose with a two-man overlap. Selby kept conceding penalties but took the lead on the stroke of half time. Strong runs from Joey Reid and Sean Campbell earned a scrum in the centre of the field, ten metres out. Number eight Wilson picked up and went left, drawing two defenders, and Clarke again provided the link to put Letorey over unopposed for a debut try. Charlie Bramley converted and Selby led 14-10 at the break.

That was as good as it got for the visitors. The penalty count caught up with them and Wetherby used the cross-field wind well. Three more catch and drives brought three tries, though the wind meant only the last was converted. At 27-14 after sixty minutes, the score reflected Wetherby's experience and superiority, and a further try ten minutes later completed the scoring at [FINAL SCORE].

A tough opening game. Selby travel to newly promoted Dinnington this Saturday, who beat Pontefract at the weekend.

The 2nd XV beat Pocklington 2nds 42-5 at Sandhill Lane. Adam Crooks captained the side from number eight, with Mellor, Swaine and Bowers forming a young front row. They are home again this coming Saturday to Burley.

The 3rd XV faced Knottingley 1st XV in a local derby. The 39-0 defeat reflects the strength of the teams in this league. 3rds travel to Stanley Rodillians on Saturday.

The ladies travelled to North Ribblesdale for their first fixture since last season's promotion. They lost 38-19, a scoreline that didn't do justice to their performance in their first match in the new league.
