From Green to Gold — A monthly update from the Treasurer
Dear Member
Why you are getting this email
Once a month I will tell you, in two minutes, what your Club said it would do, what it has done, and where it needs a hand. Your Club, Your Say.
The nights are drawing in, the clocks go back on the 25th, and the world news is no cheerier than it was last month. None of that stops us. We keep moving on. This month: the floodlight bills are in, the First XV lunches start on Saturday, there is a new Pie and Pea Bar at Bar22, and four small jobs are looking for owners.
Thirty-seven per cent.
That is how much less electricity our floodlights used last winter than the winter before. Same pitches, brighter light, and the lights on more nights a week. We swapped tired metal halide lamps for LEDs in September 2025 with a grant from National Grid's NGET Community Grant Programme, support from SSE Renewables and the late John Hepworth's legacy. Not a penny came from members. We estimated in August what the lights were supposed to do. Now we have the bills, and they did better. Awesome, well done and thanks to the guys who got us those grants - you know who you are.
What we said in August, and where we are
• Thirty-nine of you came to the AGM. About 540 of you didn't. I wrote to all of you afterwards. Two replied, but SEVEN great ideas - good enough that we are now "working them all up". More on those next month, but we will be looking for some volunteers - a really, really small amount of time a week and no accountability and you can be anonymous.
• Eleven First XV lunches, 72 seats each. The season started late, so the first is this Saturday, 10 October, against Pontefract, already sold out. Ten other First Team home fixtures to fill. Book here.
• Two volunteer project managers still wanted, for the land and for the Club's restructure. I've done all the hard work, what's left is just nagging people - plenty have this skill! We've built AI Agents to do the grunt, all you need to do is monitor the correspondence. Again, a small amount of time a week and no accountability and you can be anonymous and you can join our little Friday Band for brekkie and a chin wag.
Friday at the Club
Every Friday a small crew sits down in the clubhouse and runs your Club: Karen, Jan, Tizzi, Honor, Will, Peggy, Hicky and me. Last Friday the crew's total resources were required to train Hicky to use a computer! We have 2 grant applications in - one for crash mats and tackle pads and the second for money to support our girls' coaching programme, all helped by AI Agents. Say a prayer that we get lucky.
This week's list will include a bid for a borehole and surface irrigation so our pitches stop dying every summer (this one has been done from start to finish by our Grants AI Agent) and the sums on electric car chargers for the car park. AI helpers are increasingly doing the drudgery, so the people can do the thinking. It's more interesting than it sounds, especially when Hicky and me kick off and there are plenty of chairs free to listen in.
Four things I really need your help with
1. Count the electric cars. We are deciding whether chargers in the car park would pay. I need someone to walk the car park and count the EVs on three occasions: a First XV home game, a Sunday junior morning, and a training night. Twenty minutes a time. Before the end of October. Tell me at treasurer@selbyrufc.com.
2. Own a lunch. Our home matches are covered, but there are plenty of 2nd XV fixtures that can be used - the Swans Nest is available free of charge for any of these matches. 3 already booked - thanks. One lunch, one date, done.
3. Eat more, drink more. We had 57 covers last Thursday Training night. 25 Senior players and the rest from the Junior Section. No complaints about Chef Andy's cooking - only compliments.
This weekend saw 477 mouths fed including 153 bacon/sausage sandwiches, 94 spectator meals, 180 after match meals and 50 portions of chips leave the kitchen. And new this season Bar22 (just after the stand) will be serving Pie and Peas alongside your pint at every home match.
Get behind Andy, get involved in meal choices for the age grades, stay behind and have a night off from rushing around at home. Eat in or take away.
4. Social media. We want to re-vamp our social media. Can you help? It doesn't have to be much - a photo, a post, an idea. If you know your way around Facebook, Instagram or TikTok, your contributions and expertise would be invaluable. Again, a small amount of time a week, no accountability and you can be anonymous. Tell us at comms@selbyrufc.com.
That's it for this month. One task, one owner. A bit from all of us, rather than a lot from a few.
Thank you to Mike Magee, who couldn't get to the AGM, read every word I sent, and wrote back with a better plan than mine.
What's on
• Saturday 10 October, Pontefract at home. The first lunch of the season: Pie n Pud. Sold out. Oktoberfest follows the match.
• Saturday 17 October, Malton & Norton at home. Swan Lunch - bring your corporate clients or invite someone who has never been to a match before.
• Saturday 31 October, Morley at home. Spooktacular Yorkies for lunch, then the Halloween social.
• Every home match: Beer, Pie and Peas at Bar22.
Book a table. Bring a friend. Eat more, drink more.
One Club. Our Family.
