The Sporting Dinner
Thursday 20 May 2027
An evening with two of English rugby’s best-known players, Danny Care and Emily Scarratt, hosted by compère David Flatman.
Danny Care
A Leeds lad who made his professional debut with Leeds Tykes in 2006, Danny Care went on to become one of the most exciting scrum-halves of his generation. He spent 19 seasons at Harlequins, making close to 400 appearances. He won Premiership titles in 2012 and 2021 and the European Challenge Cup.
He won his first England cap against the All Blacks in 2008 and retired from international rugby with 101 caps. That’s the second-most by an England scrum-half. Along the way he won Six Nations titles, including the 2016 Grand Slam, and played at three Rugby World Cups.
Since retiring in 2025, Danny has moved into broadcasting as a TNT Sports pundit. His autobiography, Everything Happens for a Reason, was published in 2024.
Emily Scarratt
Emily Scarratt is an England Rugby legend who signed off her international career in style as part of the squad that lifted the 2025 Rugby World Cup. That tournament was her fifth Rugby World Cup, a record for an English player across both the men’s and women’s games.
Over a 17-year international career she won 119 Red Roses caps and 11 Six Nations titles, a record of consistency and impact at the highest level. In 2019 she was named World Rugby Women’s Player of the Year, cementing her place among the sport’s greats. She is one of England Rugby’s finest.
David Flatman
We’re delighted to welcome David Flatman back to Selby as our compère for the evening. One of rugby’s best-loved voices, “Flats” is a hugely popular host and compère.
A powerful loosehead prop, he came through the England Schools ranks alongside Jonny Wilkinson and Mike Tindall. He made his Premiership debut with Saracens in 1998 and won his first England cap against South Africa in 2000, aged just 20. He went on to win eight caps for his country.
In 2003 he joined Bath, where he spent nine seasons and made more than 150 appearances before retiring in 2012.
Since hanging up his boots, he has become one of the UK’s leading rugby broadcasters. He is a TNT Sports pundit and has covered the Six Nations, Rugby World Cups and the Premiership for ITV and Amazon Prime. He also co-hosts the popular Flats and Shanks podcast with former Wales centre Tom Shanklin.
His wit and warmth made him a firm favourite at our last Sporting Dinner, and we can’t wait to have him back.
