Memorable Performance from the u16s

Selby RUFC17 Feb - 17:55

Alex Wright

Wow, just wow!! Sunday's match was as close to a complete performance that a team could get from the first minute to the last!

Selby took a 15 man squad to visit Pocklington and provided a show that any neutral, let alone coach or parent, could only stand and applaud. All were switched on from the moment they entered the changing rooms and this was transferred into the warm up drills and then into the game itself.

A late drop out in the hosts team meant we would play 14 a side but this did not disrupt the mindset of the Selby boys and as the first whistle blew Selby took charge.

Patient build up by the forwards took the ball to the hosts 5 metre line and in the 6th minute Dylan saw a gap and dived over for the opening try, with Sam adding the conversion Selby led 0-7.

This was the beginning of what proved to be a day to remember as eight different players placed the ball over the Pocklington try line.

Forward domination saw Lawrence increase the lead on 8 minutes following controlled drives by his fellow forwards (Sam converting again) before Batsi scored a double on 12 and 19 minutes, the first a result of hard yards earned by pod work in the forwards and the second a line break which resulted in a spectacular dive to put the ball down, Sam converted the first and Selby extended the lead to 0-26.

Pocklington fought valiantly and whilst their forwards defended further attacks it was then the time for the backs to shine, Joe controlled the play from the ruck, and with supporting runs from Danny the wingers were able to exploit space out wide and Zack was next to score on 28 minutes, followed by Dan J on 32 minutes to give Selby a halftime advantage of 0-36.

The second half was a tighter affair initially, the home side found a second wind and Selby had to dig deep to repel the Pocklington attempts to break through. Both sides were disciplined throughout and whilst the scoring continued it was down to great rugby that further tries were scored.

The try of the game came on 48 minutes, Selby had possession just outside their own 22, but drives by 5 different forwards backed the hosts into their own 22 and Lawrence was the 6th forward to complete the move and score under the posts and Sam converted again to increase the score to 0-43.

Alex S and Zack completed team tries on 50 and 52 minutes and Billy made a 50 yard break to score the only solo try of the game on 58 minutes as Selby broke the 50 point ceiling to 0-58.

The hosts never once let their heads drop, making Selby work for every metre and were rewarded with a try of their own on and with three minutes remaining they finally beat the Selby defensive line and their speedy flanker managed to run in from 30 metres and touch down under the post to

give Pocklington some deserved points for their efforts, the conversion was successful and the score was 7-58.

The last word fittingly went to Selby, and Thom H, completed another move involving forwards initially, and then the rampant back line to score on the final play and the final scoreboard read 7-63.

All they players were involved in either scoring or assisting in a try today, all played with confidence and belief, and supported each other throughout. Whilst it was great to score the points the defence was just as exceptional, tackling with force, the vision of getting numbers in the ruck and out wide when needed was outstanding to restrict a capable Pocklington side to little possession and only one try was celebrated just as much.

Carla also deserves a mention with her first class sling work for Zack’s wrist post match, and Adie as always with his photos to show this is very much a collective effort!

Today is one that will live long in the memory for all the right reasons!
