U10s visit Sandal

Selby RUFC under 10's travelled to West Yorkshire this Sunday for the Sandal Festival held at Standbridge Lane.

It was a mild morning but once again, due to the recent poor weather, pitch conditions were boggy and the going was rather heavy.

Selby fielded 2 teams of 8 with substitutes. Team A played Littleborough, Sheffield RUFC and Rochdale to much success.

Team B, despite recently having much training and match time cancelled due to the harsh weather, were glad to be back in the action and came out in their first match against the home side.

It's soon became evident that Selby were the stronger squad. They played well to easily beat the Sandal youngsters. The second match against Rochdale showed them improve their confidence and performance. They completly dominated the game scoring 7 tries to Rochdale's 1.

Game 3 against Cleckheaton was another winner. Selby defense was steadfastly obdurate and they refused to let Cleckheaton over the line to score, denying some of the more powerful players through.

The final game against Sheffield Tigers was more evenly matched but by now Selby were on a roll and the youngsters powered on to win again.

The team all played with courage and skill in what must be the season highlight so far. Notable performances were Benjamin Cockeram, Tyler Higgins and Frankie Watson. However, girl of the match was Freya Clayton who was an indomitable force all morning.

They young players were applauded off the field by the coaching staff and parents.

This may have been Mother's Day but it was a great day for the dad's too.
