Morley Festival 12th October 2008
Selby U10’s 10 Vs Moortown U10’s 0
Selby started of with a very professional display showing how physical they can be close to the ruck. This provided an opportunity for the hard working hooker Nathan Youngs to score the first try of the day.
Selby kept the pressure on through the game which resulted in another try from Selby’s powerful prop Jamie Francis.
Selby were deservedly winners by two tries to nil, showing power with Miles Stelling causing havoc in the middle of the field.
Selby U10’s 0 Vs York U10’s 10
In a return fixture of the previous week Selby got a lesson on how to play with a little bit of width. York, with fresh legs, showed Selby what can be done when the ball was moved around the pitch. York scored two tries in the game, both from far out, by moving the ball and running at pace.
A very disappointed Selby side ended this group game with their first loss for some time.
Group Semi-Final
Selby U10’s 20 Vs Leodensians U10’s 0
After coming second in their group Selby faced Leos who topped theirs in the semi final. Leos had no answer to Selby’s power at the ruck, with Will Edwards destroying any ball that Leos tried to play with. Jamie Francis bullocked his way over the line to start the scoring, then Sam Pocklington sped away to claim his first of the afternoon.
The relatively inexperienced pair of Tom Black and James Hair were assisted by Jamie Francis and provided some excellent ball for Selby’s half backs.
The good quick ball was finally passed around the field and James Lloyd finished of a flowing move. The half back pair of Will Edwards and Sam Pocklington gave Henry Wright some space out wide to run down the hill towards the try line. When stopped at the line H kept the ball alive and popped to Sam Pocklington to score a great team try.
A very professional team effort with Saskia Lewis finally getting stuck in and showing the boys how to tackle!
Final
Selby U10’s 10 Vs York U10’s 5
York were very confident coming into the final as they had already beaten Selby in the group stages. However any one who has watched this team before is well aware that they can step up to the big games and provide the right game for the situation.
Discussions before the game highlighted that we should play with pace and width by passing the ball and being aggressive in defence.
Selby started excellent and with Adam Leetham, Nathan Youngs and Jamie Francis providing some good ball for the backs to start playing. After some prolonged pressure Henry Wright slipped the ball out to Kyle Shead who showed pace and agility in finishing in the corner.
York then came back but Selby matched them in defence until their speedy winger collected the ball and ran half the field for their only try.
During the second half Selby again passed the ball well and defended like lions. Henry Wright was supplied with good ball and sent a long spin pass out to Kyle Shead who again finished well.
York were trying everything but could not get out of their own half as the Selby defence was outstanding. Will Edwards was excellent in the tackle area and was backed up by everyone else, even Henry and Sam!
The final whistle went and Selby were deservedly winners on the Morley 2008 festival. A well deserved victory by all the team members!
