Selby 2 – Pocklington 1 Selby 2 – Beverley 1 Selby 5 – Driffield Saracens 1 Semi Final: Selby 1 – Sandal 0 Final: Selby 2 – York 1

The Driffield festival was the last fixture for the Selby under 10s with a day that started bright with a chilly breeze what could this end of season fixture hold for the Selby team that have had mixed resulted all year. There were 12 teams in the festival split into 3 pools with Selby in pool C.

Game 1 Selby v Pocklington
Selby started brightly and with passed the ball around well. The opening try came from a string of passes between Thomas Gable to Ben Abrams and then back to Thomas Gable who snuck past their defence to score. Pocklington responded straight away and got an equaliser when they ran straight through our defence to go into half time one all.

In the second half Selby continued to push and move around the pitch. The winning try came after some good passes from Ben Abrams to James Bamford and then into a Selby maul which saw the ball fed out to Ella Parsonage who passed to Matt Francis and finding the gap stretched it to the Try time and scored. Selby working well both defensively and attacking nearly scored again just before full time after passes from Matt Francis, Ben Abrams and Ella Parsonage before being tackled and with the ball going nowhere the whistle was blown.

Game 2 Selby v Beverley
Selby again was working well has a team and this showed in how they started the second game. From a loose ball that was picked up by Tom Scholefield and passed to Matt Francis and found the space to get past the opposition to score the opening try. Beverley nearly got and equaliser from a run down the wing but quick thinking and running by Selby saw them close down and tackle them into touch by Thomas Gable. Selby continued in the first half the better side and a good run by Ella Parsonage and pass to Sam Llewellyn but was tackled short of the line. The team was again working well and saw some good tackles but in by Melissa Howden, James Simpson and James Bamford.

The second half started with Selby advancing the lead from the restart when Ben Hudson ran at Beverley and found the gap to score. Beverley managed to pull one back when they ran though our defence. With the end of the game near Selby tried again to pile on the pressure and with a pass along the line and Brett Howden driving the ball forward into a ruck. The ball came loose and a pass from Matt Francis to Thomas Gable who lost the ball when tackled, although Beverly made a mistake and the ball came lose but a Selby knock-on saw the last play.

Game 3 Selby v Driffield Saracens
With 2 wins and if they win this game they were sure to progress to the pool winners’ cup. Selby took the game in their stride and started showing how team work counts. With progress being made down the pitch with a good run by Ben Abrams down the centre set up Tom Scholefield to drive it over the line to open the scoring. Selby continued to pass well and saw the second try come from a series of passes between Tom Scholefield to Thomas Gable to Ella Parsonage to Ben Hudson who did a little shimmy and ran past Driffield to score. Selby scored a third just before half time when Selby was just short of the try line at a scrum to Selby. With a pass from Tom Scholefield to Ben Abrams who made the reaching drive for the try line.

Selby was definitely in charge of this game and the second half continue has the first half ended. The fourth try for Selby came after passes from Tom Scholefield to James Bamford and onto Ben Hudson who did a fooled Driffield to going the wrong way when trying to tackle and skipped past to score. The fifth try came after good tackling work between James Simpson and Melissa Howden saw Selby with the ball and a pass to Matt Francis who made a great run down the wing to score. Driffield did manage a consolation try after Selby gave away a penalty and they ran straight at Selby and through the defence to score.

With Selby winning all 3 games this meant they topped there pool and qualified for the Festivals Cup. With our pool due to play the best runner up from the 3 pools.

Semi final Festival Cup Selby v Sandal
Having played Sandal at the beginning of the season they knew this was going to be no push over but Selby was all fired up and confident they could progress further. Selby again showed there good defensive work and did display great rugby. Brett Howden made a great run down the centre before being closed down and made a pass to James Simpson who made good progress in driving the ball forward but was unable to find the try line. Both sides seemed equally matched going into half time unable to score.

The second half again displayed good rugby and Selby were working hard with good passes from Tom Scholefield to James Simpson who again ran at Sandal. With very little between them the luck was on Selby’s side and in the last play of the game from a scrum to Selby saw a pass to Matt Francis and drive for the try line to score.

Final Festival Cup Selby v York
Selby’s final game was against the strong York side again having played them a few times this season and lost against them more then they had won knew this was again going to be a tough game. Selby wasn’t fazed by this and showed great determination. Selby was showing good passing skills and team work. The closest change in the first half came from lose ball being passed from Ella Parsonage to Ben Hudson who made a dash down the wing only to be penalised for handing off.

The second half was just has tight has the first. Selby gave has much pressure has they were receiving Good rugby was being played and the team was really working together has a unit. Selby scored the first try from pushing York into making mistake and with 10 metres to the try line a pass from the line out to Tom Scholefield running at York and over the line. The lead was short lived and York responded by making progress down the wing but was unable to prevent the equaliser. Selby kept their composure and with 2 minutes left made responded with a run from Ben Hudson to score Selby’s second. With a minute to go Selby again tried to push the ball deep into York’s half with a drive from Brett Howden and with York unable to regain possession of the ball Selby was related to hear the final whistle.
