On a bright windy sunny morning Selby under 10s had a late arranged game against Old Brods just before the rugby festival season begins. With most of the Selby squad turning up players were tried in different positions they had little or no experience of to see how they liked and performed in these positions. Old Brods brought one team which were a strong well organised side.

Game 1
The first half proved to be very tight with neither side able to make it to the try line. Both sides organised themselves well and coped with the pressure the other gave. The nearest Selby got to a try was from a loose ball Tom scholefield passed it to Alfie Bugg who made a run down the flank and was tackled just short of the try line. Harry Barlow also made a good run down the flank but again was tackled before the try line.

In the second half Old Brods opened the scoring after Selby gave away a penalty near the try line which they made a short pass and drove to the line and scored. The second for Old Brods came after several rucks and they found space to run past our defence and score. Old Brods got their third from winning the scrum making a short pass and again finding the space to run past the defence to score. From a scrum Matt Young got the ball and made a good pass to Harry Barlow who made a run down the wing but was pushed into touch.

Game 2
With half the team changed for the start of the second game and with players moved to less familiar positions they took on Old Brods again. Old Brods came out from the start and ran straight through Selby to open the score. This seemed to be the start of a downward spiral and Old Brods scored over and over again and went into half time having scored 4 tries. There was good spells by Selby with driving by Sam Stephens and Sam Flinders and good work in the rucks by Lauren McDermott. We did make some goods runs down the field with Michael Prosser before losing the ball after the tackle.

The second half didn’t get any better and Old Brods again scored a further 4 tries seeming to win convincingly. Selby substituted several times giving Selby’s larger squad some game play. Good play in this half came from new player this season Jonathan Green making several good tackles. Sam flinders also played well who made good tackles and runs.

Game 3
With a change of Selby’s players came the final game. Again Old Broods started the brighter and opened the scoring with 2 quick tries. Selby did put up a fight in this final game and with a good run by Zak Cicero passing the ball to Sam Flinders who opened Selby’s scoring. This Selby team in this game did perform more has a team and passed well and produced some good ruck work with Melissa Howden, Brett Howden and Zak Cicero. Selby went into half time 2 tries behind after Old Brods scored in the last play.

The second half showed some good skills by Selby with Ella Parsonage making a good run down one of the wings. Old Brods were the first to score in the second half after a knock on by Selby. Selby did respond straight away and after a run by Zac Cicero passed to Sam Flinders for him to score his second of the game. Old Brods responded by scoring again. With Selby putting the most pressure on in the second half Ella Parsonage made a driving move forward just falling short of the line. With the Selby close to the line from the scrum there was a pass to Ella Parsonage who made the short run past the Old Brods to score Selby’s third try.

Full Time Selby 3 Old Brods 5

Both sides rucked well and kept their shape. Selby worked well at times has a team. Although Selby lost the result doesn’t show how hard they tried and many were playing in positions they hadn’t played before. Selby was up against a side that gave a physically show with some of the their play appearing to be actions which aren’t part of game until next season while some was pulled up some went missed. With the rugby festival season due to start this coming Sunday Selby may well be seen has the under dogs in the tournaments which may work to our advantage if the Selby players work more together passing and thinking quicker then there opposition which to date seem to be lacking but only the players can work on this.
