Dinnington 5 - Selby 0 Dinnington 0 - Selby 4 Dinnington 3 - Selby 0 Dinnington 2 - Selby 2

Selby took a trip down the M18 to Dinnington this is a place that we have never been too that hasn’t had the wind blowing at gale force wind (or that what it seems). With Dinnington have enough for 2 teams Selby took 12 players who rotated to play 4 games.

Game 1 Dinnington 5 v Selby 0
With the wind against the Selby team they had to work hard which they did but with Dinnington more than use to these conditions they had the advantage. Dinnington scored first after finding space and running down the side. Selby put some good short passes together across the field from the scrum half Melissa Howden passing to Tom Scholefield to Harry Barlow and then to Brett Howden and driving the ball forward before losing the ball in the ruck. Selby made 2 great tackles but didn’t regain the ball before Dinnington again broke free and found enough space to advance the score. Selby was winning the scrums and making short passes but on one of these occasions the ball was blown away from our intended player and Dinnington picked up the ball and scored again. The game continued to be hard fought and Selby won scrums with the help of Harvey Catling and matt Young, and from Dinningtons half Harry Barlow ran ½ the pitch he passed the ball to Brett Howden just short of the try line was tackled preventing Selby scoring. With Dinnington pushing Selby back down the pitch they scored a 4th from a maul that they managed to drive over the try line. There 5th came from a loose ball created by the wind coming out of a Selby pass.

Game 2 Dinnington 0 v Selby 4
With refreshments taken and 3 players changed the game started again with the wind in our favour this time. From the start Selby started by driving the ball down the pitch and some short passes from Zak Cicero to Melissa Howden to Harry Barlow to James Simpson and then to Jack Riodan saw the ball just short of the try line. With Selby not being able to push the ball over the line they passed it along the width of the length of the pitch ending in Lauren McDermott’s hand who had 2 feet to go, but has she tried to make the short distance was tackled quite hard by Dinnington into touch. Selby won the lineout from Dinnington and a pass to Tom Scholefield saw us score the opening try. From the restart Selby advanced down the pitch quickly after a pass from Melissa Howden to Harry Barlow who ran ½ the pitch to score. Tom scolefield had the ball knocked out his hands which was picked up by Harry Barlow and drove the ball forward from the maul the ball was passed to Jack Roidan won made a good run down the flank to score our 3rd try. With Dinnington trying to get back into the game Selby made a great tackle by Zak Cicero preventing Dinnington scoring. From the scrum Selby tried to get the ball away from the danger area and only made a few feet before being pushed into touch. With Selby winning the line out they passed it along the line to Jack Riodan who ran the length of the pitch to score a 4th. Selby was advancing down the pitch again driving the ball forward with Michael Prossor who passed to Harry Barlow and was tackled just short of the try line.

Game 3 Dinnington 3 v Selby 0
With the wind against us again we started well and with a pass from Tom Scholefield to Melissa Howden to Harry Barlow advanced down the pitch before going into touch. Selby was winning a majority of the lineout’s and this was no exception and again the ball was passed along the line pushing into Dinningtons half’s. Dinnington made a tackle to take the ball off Selby and made a break down the flank to open the scoring. Dinnington’s 2nd came shortly after the restart from a loose ball that Selby missed a tackle and allowed them to take the ball over the line. Selby continued to put some good tackle in with Michael Prosser and scrabbled in the mauls with Jack Riodan but again Dinnington got the better of Selby and found some open space to run down the middle to score a third.

Game 4 Dinnington 2 v Selby 2
In the final game with the wind on our side Selby picked up a loose ball and from the ruck Melissa Howden passed to Harry Barlow who ran down the flank before passing to Jonathan Greene who was tackled just short of the try line. With the ball close to the line ZaK Cicero tried to push the ball over and winning a penalty for dinnington coming in at the side. The ball was passed to Harry Barlow who ran it across the line to score the first try. From the restart Selby pushed forward with Jack Riodan who passed to Tom Scholefield and drove the ball over the line again. Dinnington got a try back after Selby made a mistake and the ball went loose. The game continued with great rugby being played by both teams. Selby pushed down the flank with Harry Barlow before being taken into touch. Dinnington won the lineout and ran ½ the pitch before Selby pushed them into touch. Again Dinnington won the ball and managed to drive the ball over the line. In the last minute of the play of the game Selby was advancing down the pitch and heading for the line from a mix of rucks and mauls and with the ball in Brett Howden hand was tackled just short of the line preventing Selby winning the final game and settling for a draw.

The games flowed really well and some really good junior rugby was played by both teams which made it existing to watch on a day that the wind was the extra player for each team when they had it on their backs. Selby performed acting has a unit when driving the ball forward and making the short passes which was needed on a day like today. The coaches asked the parents today to pick the man of the match which was very difficult and unfortunately there wasn’t 12 trophy’s to give today, we had to pick one and collectively we agreed today’s man of the match was Michael Prosser. Well done today to everyone you all gave more
