

It was a blustery sunny morning with the old shower. Selby had an away fixture at Sandal RUFC along with Scunthorpe. With Selby knowing Sandal was a tough team to beat on Sandals home soil Selby was up for a challenge and didn't disappoint.
All 3 teams fielded 2 sides; Selby fielded 2 well balanced sides to play the 4 games to handle their tough opposition.
Game 1 – Selby v Scunthorpe B
Scunthorpe had the start but Selby was bright and alert and took advantage from the scrum and a pass from James Bamford to Nick Clarke saw a good run down the side to score the opening try. Shortly after the restart Selby knocked on but quickly won the ball back and with the wind to our advantage Sam Flinders zig - zagged down the pitch to score our second try. Play restarted and Selby continued to be the stronger side going into half time with the lead.
Half time Selby 2 – Scunthorpe B 0.
Selby restarted the second half in the same vine has the 1st half with good tackles from Ben Hudson preventing Scunthorpe getting into the game. From a penalty to Selby James Bamford passed to Ben Hudson who capitalised to score our 3rd try. With the wind against Selby they pushed on winning a scrum which led to a good effort by Alfie Bugg which was stopped just before the try line and the end of the match.

Game 2 – Sandal A v Selby
Selby’s second team took to the field after watching a strong team performance by their team mates. Selby was caught napping when Sandal took the lead which seemed to come from nowhere to open up the scoring. There was good refereeing from the Sandal coach from an incorrect tackle from a Sandal player, with Selby having a penalty Matthew Francis drove the ball forward with good interception play with Brett Howden, Melissa Howden, Matthew Francis and Michael Prosser couldn’t take the advantage. Selby continued to push hard with good tackles from Alfie Bugg and Melissa Howden, but unfortunately Sandal intercepted and scored a second try by running down half the pitch.
Half time Sandal 2 – Selby 0.
Selby came out fighting in the second half determined to get something out of the match the continued to put pressure on Sandal with a good run from Michael Prosser which was intercepted by Sandal. From the ruck Sandal stole the ball which led to their 3rd breakaway try. Selby continued to push from the restart with good runs from Matthew Francis, rucking from Melissa Howden, and tackles by Brett Howden. With Selby piling on the pressure Selby made a run down the side by Alfie Bugg to get Selby’s first try. Sandal restarted but made mistakes witch lead a good pickup by Michael Prosser who passed it to Matthew Francis and then to Alfie Bugg to score our second try. With Selby back in the game and time running out Selby picked up the pace and continued to tackle hard with good team work Matthew Francis picked up the ball and scored our 3rd try just before full time.

Game 3 – Selby v Scunthorpe A
With Selby’s other team now back to face their second opponents Selby had the start. Scunthorpe had a strong team playing a rip and run game took the advantage of the wing and scored the opening try. Selby continued to play their own game and tackled Scunthorpe well defending has a team. Scunthorpe scored a second try from a breakaway down the middle which led to Scunthorpe going into the lead at half time.
Half time Selby 0 – Scunthorpe A 2.
Selby did not let the half time score deflate them and a good tackle by Jack Riodan to keep their spirits up. Selby continued to work hard has a team. From a knock on by Selby Scunthorpe enhanced there lead by one more try.

Game 4 – Sandal B v Selby
Sandal started the game which was fast and furious by both teams. The team worked hard together and saw some good rucking by Harry Barlow. Selby stole the ball from a line out which saw a good run by Sam Llewellyn and then onto Harry Barlow who was stopped short of the try line by Sandal just before half time.
Half time Sandal 0 – Selby 0.
Selby wanting to make up for there last match started the second half the brighter side which saw a poachers try from Harry Barlow from a ball that came out of the ruck to open up the scoring. Selby continued to put on the pressure and with true grit and determination pushed further ahead from a run in open play by Ben Hudson. Sandal tried to get back into the game but Selby held them back and didn't allow that to happen.

In conclusion Selby’s 2 teams were well balanced and worked hard against their opponents to earn a well-deserved overall win against strong winds and opponents. Showing their hard work in training has finally started to work to their advantage. This was one Sunday morning that all the team can be very proud.
