DONCASTER FESTIVAL MARCH 2010

Jenny Heath1 Apr 2010 - 07:21

Selby fielded 2 sides who were given the names yellows and greens. Below are the match reports for the Selby Yellows.

Selby Yellows 3 v Sheffield Rufc 1

Sheffield looked a big athletic team and they would prove a stern test for the Yellows. This initially proved to be the fact with the Selby front three engaged in a forward battle with the South Yorkshire outfit. With the forwards fronting up well the improving back line began to make in roads and Tom was unlucky not to score the first try when held up over the line after a pass from Will. Selby were now pressurising Sheffield with every play with the Selby three quarters causing chaos in the Sheffield defence and this pressure paid off with Will forcing his way through two defenders to score the first try. Defence wins matches and Selby’s tackling was now to the fore, forcing Sheffield to flood the ruck area which was leaving room for backs to exploit and it was not long before a quick ripple of passes put Tom in to score Selby's second try .

Half Time

Sheffield came out for the second half with a determination to put pressure on the Yellows and again it took a good tackling display to keep the big South Yorkshire team out, Selby needed another try to make the game safe. This try came when Will ran onto a loose lineout ball from Sheffield to score his second try and Selby's third. Sheffield scored a try with the last play of the match but this is no more than they deserved.

Selby Yellows 0 v Lymm 2

Lymm proved to be probably the best drilled team we have played this season. The game started with Selby under pressure from the start but fantastic tackling from Selby kept Lymm team out but right at the end of the first half Isaac was tackled in goal and appeared to touch the ball down for a scrum five but the referee awarded a try. The second half started with Selby pressurising the Lymm line but good tackling from the North West team kept the Yellows out. Lymm scored a second try right at the death when Selby missed a tackle for once which allowed the Lymm player to touch down.

Selby Yellows 4 v Leamington 1

Selby started well in this game and the front three of Olly, Brandon and Frasier were winning quality ball in the loose and set piece which was putting Selby's backline on the front foot, this led to Harry scoring the first try by darting over the line. Moments later the Forwards got in on the act with Olly S picking the ball up from broken play and rumbling over the line. A good team move from forwards to backs put Tom clear to Score a third try.

Half Time

Leamington came back at Selby in the Second half scoring a try when Selby had switched off , this try woke the yellows up with Isaac testing the Leamington defence on a couple of occasions and Reuben as ever tackling well above his weight . Leamington were now again under pressure on their own line which resulted in Will Tackling one of the Leamington players on the line staying on his feet and ripping the ball from the player and touching down for the fourth try . This was a well deserved win that put the yellows into the Semi finals.

Semi Final Selby Yellows 2 v Sheffield Tigers 0

Another Sheffield side to play and if Selby thought the first South Yorkshire team was big this one was even bigger. The size of their opponents did not seem to bother the Yellows who immediately set about the task of competing with the Tigers at the contact area. The front three of Frasier, Olly S and Brandon were doing a terrific job and were winning the physical battle. Brandon then picked up the ball in broken play and ran strongly into the Tigers half where he was supported by Olly S and Frasier , in the resulting maul which had formed Will went in received the ball off Brandon and rolled out of the maul to score in the corner.

Half Time

The Second half started with Selby just about on top but having to work tirelessly in defence to keep the Tigers at bay. Selby then launched a series of pick and drives which forced the Yellows deep into the Sheffield half where from the base of a ruck Harry picked the ball up and deceived the defenders to score. This was a great team result against a big physical side.

Final Selby Yellows 0 v Lymm 3

Lymm again proved too strong for Selby who went down three tries to nil. This was no disgrace as Lymm were deserved winners. Selby played hard and fair during the tournament and should be proud or their achievements.

Please note that due to the fixture clashes with our two sides the Selby Greens reports were compiled by Steve Keetley as I couldn't be in two places at once!
