Yorkshire Cup – Round Five
Selby 25 v 20 Wetherby

With the nerves that usually accompany big games, it was encouraging to see such a calm and focused Selby changing room ahead of kick-off. As the teams began their warm-ups, the weather took a turn for the worse, with conditions suggesting a tight, physical contest rather than a fast, free-flowing affair.

Following a good, purposeful warm-up and a respectful minute’s silence for Cain North, the game got underway. Recent close encounters between the sides meant Selby knew to expect a bruising challenge, and Wetherby arrived keen to make a statement. From the opening collisions, it was clear both teams were ready for the physical battle.

Despite the conditions, the match developed into a high-quality contest. Selby started strongly, moving the ball well, and were rewarded when quick passing created space for Will to break the line and score the opening try.

Wetherby responded with determination, their powerful pack making ground and only being denied by some outstanding covering tackles from Selby. Eventually, a well-worked passing move saw the visitors cross for a deserved try.

Selby regrouped well, lifting their intensity and attacking with purpose. Two excellent tries from Tyler L, along with another for Will, put the hosts back in control. Across the pitch, Selby’s defence worked tirelessly, halting Wetherby’s strong runners and cutting down space out wide. However, Wetherby continued to threaten and added another well-constructed score.

As the game swung from end to end, Selby’s backs moved the ball sharply, allowing Oscar H to finish brilliantly in the corner under heavy defensive pressure. With cracks appearing in the Wetherby defence, Will used his pace and strength once more to break through and score a fine try.

To their credit, Wetherby refused to fade, rallying late on to add two further well-worked tries and keep the contest alive until the final whistle.

It was a tremendous game of rugby, played in testing conditions by two committed teams. Every Selby player contributed to a spirited and disciplined performance, securing a hard-fought 25–20 victory and progression in the Yorkshire Cup.
