Friday night rugby under the lights at Sandhill Lane saw Selby RUFC Women welcome a combined Pocklington & Beverley XV for a pre-season friendly. A lively atmosphere greeted the teams, with a fantastic crowd turning out to support the players and enjoy a thrilling evening of rugby.
Before kick-off, Selby RUFC were delighted to host guests for a pre-match dinner in the Swan’s Nest. Among those in attendance were representatives from Pearwood Financial Planning, Low Farm Energy and Adina Developments, proud sponsors of the club’s new playing shirts. Their continued support is invaluable in helping to grow women’s and girls’ rugby at Selby.
On the pitch, both sides delivered an entertaining contest full of commitment, skill, and attacking flair. Selby started brightly, testing the visitors’ defence with some sharp running lines and strong support play, but Pocklington & Beverley proved equally determined, countering with powerful phases of their own. The game ebbed and flowed throughout, keeping the crowd engaged right up to the final whistle.
While the scoreline mattered less than the performance, the fixture gave coaches on both sides plenty of positives to build on ahead of the new season. For Selby, the match was another important step in developing their squad depth and welcoming newer players into senior rugby, while also showcasing the strength and spirit that continues to grow within the team.
A huge thank you goes to Pocklington & Beverley for making the trip and contributing to such a competitive and enjoyable match. Thanks also to the Selby supporters who came down in numbers to cheer on the women – your encouragement makes all the difference.
With the league season just around the corner, Selby Women can take confidence from this performance and look forward to what promises to be another exciting year ahead.
The squad is growing and new players of any ability are always welcome. Training takes place on Wednesday evenings, and it’s a brilliant opportunity to join a fantastic group of women in a sport that’s really on the rise – especially with the Women’s Rugby World Cup showcasing the game at the highest level.
