Selby Ladies secure landslide win for first home game

Just over a year late, Selby and Grimsby meet again for a rematch on home turf, both teams having progressed a lot in that time. It was an uncertain start with torrential rain and a lightning storm threatening to cancel the game.

Thirty seconds after a soaked kick-off from Grimsby, and Ellie Green scored Selby’s first home try of the season. The Grimsby team were quick to turn around after the restart but Isobel Steven managed to break through the line, scoring the second try of the match from near the halfway line. A swift conversion from her brought Selby to 7 points.

The rain broke and the sun started to appear as the game went on, softening the harsh conditions. Meganne Summers scored a further try, dodging and handing off tackles left and right. Taking a breath, she slotted the ball between the posts to convert her try, all within the first ten minutes of the match.

Ellie Green nipped through a gap in the Grimsby defense to score another try only minutes later and Isobel Stevens follows suit with a fourth directly under the posts. She converts her own try for the score to finish at 31-0 after the first 20 minutes.

A quick break brought the Grimsby team back new and refreshed. Selby gave away a few penalties and came close to scoring another try, however Grimbsy persevered, scoring a hard fought try and converted to bring them up to 31-7.

This re-lit Selby’s fire and brought on a tense 20 minutes, with both sides fighting through tackles and mauls. After a clean break from Katie, Em Owen barrelled over the line, taking a Grimsby player with her, giving Selby another 5 points. Meganne Summers added a further 2 after bouncing the ball in off the post.

One last rest before the final 20 minutes of the match saw both teams return to the field with grit and determination. Grimsby’s tough defence held steady for a while, but conceded another converted try by Isobel Steven, earning her a hat trick.

Another tense few minutes around the halfway line as both sides battled for ground, until Honor Ratcliffe broke through the line and scored one last try for Selby. Isobel Steven kicked one more conversion through the posts bringing the final score up to a hard earned 52-7.
