Two for Two for Selby Ladies

It’s two for two as Selby Ladies win their second consecutive game of the season 40 – 15

It was a cloudy start to what can only be described as a fast- paced match. The game was barely a minute old when Selby were caught on the back foot and Bowden edged in front with a great try down the wing.

It was time for the Selby Ladies to step it up a gear. The next try coming from the ever-determined Sadie Hunt, using her immense speed – a common theme throughout this game to the frustration of the opposition – to go onto score her first try. Moments later, Sadie once again propelled herself over the try line to take another as Bowden could only look on in despair.

It was time for Georgia Smith to secure the next with a cheeky little kick from captain Honor Ratcliffe down the pitch, giving Georgia the chance to launch herself onto the ball to score the next try of the game.

It was definitely a match of two halves with both sides as fierce as each other. A storming breakaway pass from Alice Thomas to Sadie allowed her once again to squeeze through a mid-field gap and charge her way to another try for her hat trick. Half time bought a much-needed breather with Selby leading 20 points to 5.

Back on the field, Bowden increased the pressure with strong passes which could not be faltered, preventing possession for the Selby side. Could Bowden make their comeback? There certainly was no sense of premature Selby triumphalism in the air.

Nonetheless, Selby picked themselves back up and a great set piece allowed Sadie to coolly slot through another gap in the defence to get her fourth try of the game.

This led to a crafty short pass from Ellie Green to Meganne Birch, allowing her to nip down the wing to score her first (but not last) try of the game.

Still the intrigue was not over with Bowden as they found their second wind. 2 spectacular tries came out of nowhere to the wild cries of the home crowd.

Bowden’s spirits had lifted, but the damage was done. With tired legs, their fate was sealed and to add salt to the wound, Meganne and Sadie took a further 2 tries to finish the game at 40-15 to Selby Ladies.

Selby look forward to a re-match with the powerful Bowden side. For now, it is onwards and upwards as their next game with Grimsby Lynx’s takes place on 5th December.
