Selby storm to victory with a home win against Grimsby Lynx's

Lauren Barker Reports

It was a big game and an even bigger result for Selby last Sunday, as the ladies kept their winning streak going with an emphatic 25-10 victory against the Grimsby Lynx’s on Sunday.

Both teams took to the pitch under the watchful eye of a double rainbow, meaning one thing… rain was ready to wreak havoc. On paper, the re-match was a mouth-watering clash, full of individual head-to-heads, with Selby wanting to defend their unbeaten record.

After a slow start demonstrating equal ability, Selby swiftly grew into the game. Quick hands, following well-worked passing saw them stretch the Grimsby defence, paving the way for Georgia Smith to slide in for the first try of the game.

Kym Hurst followed this up, cleverly picking up a loose ball to charge down the centre, launching into mid-air and gleefully returning to earth to score.

Impressive passing between Georgina Birch and Rebecca Townson saw the ball glide through the air to the hands of Ellie Naylor, whos impressive breakthrough saw her fly down the left wing to gain Selby much needed ground.

Towards the end of the first half, the pendulum was swinging back and forth with both teams taking full advantage when they had the ball. At half time, Grimsby's pure grit and determination meant they only trailed by just 10 points.

The second half was dominated by strategic kicking. It was far from pretty as the rain hammered down and kicked up the mud. A tactically hacked ball upfield from Meganne Summers followed by an astonishing run, racing onto her own kick, added pressure to the retreating opposition to move the game into Selby’s favour once again.

Sadie Hunt’s moment of magic was given to her from a stunning set of strong passes across the field and she went on to score on the right wing recently vacated by Grimsby. As play began again, spectators might have thought they were watching a replay, as the exact same set of passes allowed Sadie to get her second. Nine minutes later, a loose ball was scooped up by Georgia to score again.

Grimbsy had their chances and were desperate for a flash of inspiration from somewhere. It duly arrived when a few faltering passes from Selby allowed Grimsby to grab the last two well deserved tries of the game.

But the away team were unable to build towards a grandstand finish with Selby’s defence snatching balls away at the last minute, holding off a second-half fightback to win the game.

The home side’s stunning performance completed a superb three out of three wins and they thoroughly look forward to more games in the New Year.
