Three in a row for Selby's Thirds!

The signs looked ominous as Moortown’s powerful looking squad warmed up as the Selby skipper frantically trawled the clubhouse looking for players. Fortunately Troy the visiting kiwi stepped up and squeezed his size 13 feet into some borrowed boots.

Selby took to the field with 15 and on receiving the kick off the forwards took the attack to Moortown and looked as if they had played together for years. When the ball was released to the backs Kev Lamb and Ben Lunt looked dangerous. After a period of sustained pressure the ball was moved out and Lunt cut a lovely angle to score under the posts. Scott Adamson converted.

The forwards continued to take the game to Moortown with Bell, Troy, Wass and Spence making good yards. Another great passage of play allowed Lunt to evade several defenders before deftly offloading to Jordan Walker who went in at the corner.

Jim Wood having put in a great effort had to leave the field with a sprained ankle but Nath came on to make his rugby union debut. Walker was put in for another try before half time and a scoreline of 17 0 reflected Selby’s dominance. Unfortunately Simon Lee also went off injured but Lewis Peam had answered the call and drove from Worksop to come on for his first game in 6 years.

The dressing down that the Moortown coach could be heard giving at half time fired up his side and they came back strongly as the second half started. Selby defended resolutely but the penalty count was rising and the pressure eventually told as Moortown scored. More Moortown pressure followed but some great tackling kept them out with particularly big hits coming from Wass, Nath and Troy.

A great kick and chase from Selby pinned the Moortown fullback behind his own line and from the ensuing scrum Wass, who was having the game of his life, crashed over. Moortown threw everything at Selby still but more great work from the forwards led to a deserved try for skipper Spence.

The game ended with Selby on the front foot and Moortown well beaten. The entire team had played superbly. Special mention to Geoff Barlow who stepped up from the fourths and put a great shift in for 80 minutes. Also, Andrew Wilson and Ian Tasker ran the ball strongly throughout.
