3rds toil for no reward

A bright opening salvo from the once again very changed Selby 3rds was blown away by what can only be described as a young, fresh and fitter West Park Leeds 2nd team. The opening day win against Wetherby was put into stark contrast by the fact that only 3 of the backs and 4 of the forwards from that game played on Saturday and they learnt a valuable lesson in traveling "light" with WPL boosting the usual influx of Students and a 6 man strong subs bench.

In fact had Selby played the middle section of the game with the same intensity as the first and last 10 it may well have been closer but the physical exertions in winning the forwards battle proved heavy as when Selby did have the ball they either spilt it forward or threw wild passes trying to unlock a sturdy WPL defence.

Marcus Loveday came out with some credit as he put in a great performance on the back row and tackled like a man twice his size and weight which eventually saw him taken off with a damaged shoulder. Jim Wood was excellent filling in at prop as was Geoff Barlow playing his first full 3rd team league fixture. Not bad for a regular 5th team player and last years out going 5th team captain Adam Brown also played well when he entered the fray.

No one had any complaints at the final whistle and too a man the WPL players clapped the worn out and slightly downbeat players off the pitch and Selby returned the honour with the same verve and gusto that they had been shown.

Moortown 2's this weekend......Roll on Saturday and lets do it all over again!!!
