Selby's 3rds at Ribblesdale

Despite a long list of injuries and unavailabilities Selby took 17 players plus Stu Shepherd and the sheep on the long journey to Ribblesdale.

As the sun shone and Ribblesdale started strongly with powerful forward runs and some elusive backs it looked like a long afternoon was in store. Ribblesdale’s efforts were rewarded with 2 converted tries for a 14 – 0 lead. Further tries looked inevitable but Selby stepped up their efforts with Jamie Francis to the fore in defence.

Just before half time Selby started putting some passes and strong runs together and after several thwarted efforts Kev Lamb was on hand to crash over. 14 – 5 At half time.

Selby’s forwards started to show their power in the second half and got more control of the ball both in the scrums and loose. Ribblesdale had 5 subs but they were not making much impact against resolute tackling.

Mike Goldsworthy and Nick Firth made some good breaks and after Ribb tried to run from deep the ball was turned over and Goldsworthy scampered over. Moore’s conversion made it a 2 point deficit.

Selby continued pressing and Ribb were under pressure and giving penalties away. Danny Moore had a chance at goal and slotted it calmly for Selby to take the lead for the first time. With ten minutes to go he calmly slotted another but the game was not over.

Ribblesdale threw everything at Selby and a try seemed likely but great defence from everyone including Bell, Case and Hambrecht kept them at bay. In the last minute the referee inexplicably gave Ribb a lineout inside the Selby 22 but the defence held firm and Selby claimed a great win against the odds.

A great effort from all 17 players and superb support from Shep and the Knowles family. Man of the match Bell also won the boat race and the sheep returned safely to Selby for another year.
