Following on from their comfortable opening day win against Bradford & Bingley, match day 2 saw Selby’s 2nds face Heath 2nds in the Yorkshire Merit League Championship North on Saturday at Sandhill Lane.
With a team depleted by a mixture of injuries and call-ups to the 1sts, Selby’s young scratch side started well against a powerful and well drilled Heath side. The first half saw a pretty even contest with two fine breakaway runs halted by some fine Heath scramble defence with Selby opening up in the form of a Hunt penalty.
It was Heath however that opened the try scoring with a couple of rumbling tries by their powerful pack together with an interception breakaway. Injuries struck Selby hard losing both experienced half backs McLoughlin and Hunt and they had to quickly restructure. Despite this Selby stuck at their task and responded with a fine running try just before half time.
The second half saw Heath’s organisation and structure allow them to extend their lead with a number of powerful tries whilst Selby did not help themselves with a couple of yellow cards. This Selby side are however not lacking in character with Selby’s Man of the Match Chapman, Roue, Campbell and Leetham to the fore and they crossed to score a further consolation try before Heath closed the match with their 10th try.
Final score was 56-15 in favour of the visitors.
