Selby 2nd team arrived at Moortown in dribs and drabs at various times and after a lacklustre warm up started the game in a very similar vein. Moortown kicked off and Selby coughed up the ball and were under the cosh for a long period but good defensive stints from the forwards kept them out for a while until eventually the pressure told and Moortown got over for the first of their twelve tries.
Three more mistakes where the ball was given back to Moortown resulted in further scores with their scrum half converting 75% of the scores Selby were looking at a hiding
A half time rollicking by skipper Paul Randall playing out of position at Hooker appeared to shake some fire into Selby but another mistake saw Moortown run another converted try in. Retired veteran Duncan Phillips, who played the full 80 minutes at the same location he had made his debut for Selby 43 years earlier, came into the game for a brief period and managed a few tackles but to no avail. Moortown’s strong running, especially their Kiwi no. 6 created holes all over to run in further tries.
Some good commitment from a lot of players with a mix of regular 2nd, 3rd & 4th team players interspersed with come back retirees.
Tough day but a team that stuck to a difficult task right to the end of the game
