Copperwheat starts another season…

Ian Copperwheat joins Selby 2nd team for the first match of the season. Ian has played rugby at Selby for more years than he can remember and he is highly regarded by both young and old as a cornerstone of what rugby represents.

A gentle giant off the pitch, friendly to all, sharing his rugby stories from his long rugby past and when on the pitch, he is part of the front row union, creating the solid platform for the team and did not look out of place. Ian was playing along side some of our youngsters, now playing senior rugby from last seasons colts side in Josh Ginty, Eddie Liddle and Thomas Gabel.

Selby 2nds played against Wath RUFC at Sandhill Lane, unfortunately could not follow in the footsteps of the 1st team with a win, losing 5-31 comments Paul Gabel. The final score does not reflect the game on the day added Paul. Selby were on the back foot most of the game and camped in their own 22 but time after time successfully defended until statistics prevailed and a gap opened up to allow Wath to score, this was repeated several times over the 80 minutes.

When Selby were in possession and on the front foot, they played with width and a kicking game which allowed the wings and full back to prob behind the Wath defence, eventually resulting in Selby’s only try buy Kirk. Every player on the pitch gave all, on a hot day with the ground as solid as ice, but a mention to Thomas Gabel should be given for his defensive tackling on the try line and his running in attack, a good start to a senior career at Selby.

Selby 2nds are at home again this Saturday against Pocklington 3s, KO 15.00.
