Paul Gabel Writes

The perfect weather for a game of 15 a side rugby at Sandhill Lane on one of the best pitches in Yorkshire. The occasion brought Goole RUFC 2nd team to Selby, with Selby 1st team travelling to Goole in the continuing league battle on the same day.

With the late call up of a couple of players to the first team due to injury, Selby 2nds then called up from the 3rds in Rob Askin and Matt Thompson, writes Paul Gabel.

Goole started well, with ball in hand and looking to play one man rugby up the middle of the field, making the hard yards and using the bulk of the forwards, phase after phase. Selby 2nds were able to absorb the pressure and showing calm composure, were able to hold the line time after time limiting the yards Goole deserved.

Selby 2nds were fielding a younger than normal side with the addition of 3 colts in Eddie Liddle, Oli Husband and Aaron Bishop who fitted into the side, as if they had played senior rugby all season.

Selby opened the scoring with a well worked try involving most of the team and this boosted Selby's confidence in playing a varied free flowing running game throughout the first half creating good ball for the forwards and backs. President of Selby RUFC, Doug Skelton commented that "the first half was a pleasure to watch". Selby led the visitors at the half time whistle with 5 tries and 3 conversions (31) to Gooles 2 tries (10) and looked as if this was going to be a fruitful second half for Selby.

The second half started with a bang with the home side scoring in the first minute, gaining the ball from the kick off and scoring in the corner. Unfortunately, this would be the only memorable moment of the half. Goole tried to kick start their game plan, using the big forwards to barge up the field but lack of concentration and fitness caused them to lose the ball in the tackle time after time. Selby on the other hand assumed that they could score from first phase and found themselves running out of space with the Goole backs covering well. For both teams the game was played mostly in the middle of the field, with the ball switching frequently from one side to the other and no real progress throughout the second half ending in only 1 try to each team.

The game ended at 36-15 to Selby 2nds and played in good spirit by both teams. Selby had the upper hand this time and will look forward to the next time the local derby is played.
