Report by Duncan Phillips

Selby 2nd Team started the season with a convincing 5-point haul against a decent Bradford and Bingley 2nd team.

From the start Selby were using the pace of the young side cutting through the larger back line causing all sorts of defensive problems for B’s. It was not long before the electric Ramsey shrugged off tacklers to selflessly pass the ball to George Stoker to cross for the first try which he converted to make it 7-0. Selby’s forwards were making a mess of Bradford’s scrum with the front row of Tunningley, Thompson and McCoy putting Bradford on the back foot. Selby’s young backline once again showed their pace and running lines and with Charlie Thompson in constant support he took the ball to race in under the posts with Joe Ramsey converting to bring the score up to 14-0. Bradford and Bingley were not a side to lay down and following some good lineout work and strong running were camped in Selby’s 22m area for the majority of the next 20 minutes coming away with two tries and a conversion narrowing Selby’s lead to two points 14-12. The introduction from the bench of James Blaymire caused B’s problems in the loose and his strong running style they found difficult to handle, another strong scrum on B’s 5-yard line resulted in a push over try taken by Blaymire filling in at no.8 wide out on the left with Ramsey narrowly missing the conversion Half time score 19-12

Selby started the second half in an ebullient mood and using rolling substitutes to ensure everybody in the squad got adequate game time the whole side were fizzing with a combination of strong direct running, pacey backs, great off loads and well-timed passing soon put Ramsey through for his own try which he converted to take the score to 26-12. Selby carried on in the same style with B’s tiring and all Selby players putting in a good shift Harrison Green playing his best game yet for the second team ran in from the 22 with Ramsey again converting to stretch the lead to 33-12. It was now Selby’s turn to be camped in the opposition 22 and further strong running resulted in Campbell up in support to take the ball from 20m out to run over near the posts to bring the score to 40-12 with Ramsey’s conversion.

The final score was converted by Scrum half Jarrod Dixon who controlled the forwards and the game throughout, after feeding Harrison Green for his second try to take the score to 47-12 with the final whistle coming ten minute later with no further scores.
