Match Report (Please keep to 250 words)
Selby seconds travelled to Scunthorpe this week, with a number of forced changes from the team who were victorious last week. But were confident of victory. Final score Selby 41 Scunthorpe 14
Selby welcomed into the side Dan white and Sam Duffy who had been impressing in the third team. Shuffled the pack with ash Winstanly unavailable Scott Adamson stepped up to 10 and Jarrod Dixon in to 9 with Matty Leetham filling the vacant 15 spot two debuts to guests Cummings and German rugby league international Sebastian Peter Kev Lamb returned to skipper the side, club stalwart Mark Toye bolstered the bulk of the pack. With all the changes Selby started confidently, from the whistle and after only two minutes of play Kev Lamb crashed through two tacklers to score the opening try of the day. Jarrod Dixon stepped up to kicking duties but the first sailed just wide.
Selby 5-0 to the good.
Selby looked confident, , from a line out Dan White gathered the rolling maul moved forward Romaniw controlling the ball at the back, Dixon moved the ball quickly to Adamson a lovely timed pass for Cummings saw the new boy walk over the line to score Selby’s second try of the day. Dixon added the conversion 12-0.
Scunthorpe who had strengthened from the team the previous week came back at Selby and were not letting Selby have it their own way. After 3 efforts were held up they were rewarded with a well-constructed try and the conversion was added. 12-7
A sloppy restart from Selby and with Scunthorpe with the upper hand in the scrum, they crashed over again from short range taking the lead for the first time and game on. 12-14. A forced double substitution with Duffy and Tunningly both leaving the field with injury saw Randell and Shaw take the field.
With immediate impact and almost his first touch of the game the impressive shaw broke the Scunthorpe line supported by Dixon and Blaymire, the supporting forwards drove for the line but were just short the ball popped up for leetham with a swan dive he was over in the corner Dixon added the conversion and Selby went into the half time break 19-14 in front.
Selby started the second half strongly with lamb going in for his second try. Adamson found the willing runner and with some great footwork he wrong footed the last defender and Selby had another try conversion missed. 24-14
Selby’s next two try's came in quick succession Jo shaw grabbing his first of the day after dancing down the touchline and big crash ball centre Cummings carrying three defenders over after a turnover forced by Toye and Blaymire. Both conversions were missed
34-14
With 10 minutes to go Selby were then reduced to 14 as a big hit in midfield from lamb was adjudged to be a shoulder charge and the referee brandished the yellow card, a further yellow card was shown to Shem the impressive young prop too enthusiastic at the breakdown and Selby were down to 13.
Down to 13 Selby played some of the best controlled rugby forwards taking the drives, toye and Blaymire, white and Romaniw were outstanding phase after phase winding down the clock.
But not content with the score Dixon dashed for the line a last ditch tackle denied the young 9 a deserved score but the ball was recycled quickly and leetham showing a great turn of pace went in again for his second try and the last action of the day. Dixon added the conversion and Selby were the winners final score Selby 41 Scunthorpe 14.
Selby played some great rugby at times scoring freely and maintains the 100 % start to the season. With a number of promising performances across the board confidence is high ahead of next week’s league fixture against Leeds Medics and Dentists.
