Middlesbrough RUFC 36 – 24 Selby RUFC
Report by Ian Marlow
Selby’s winning mini-streak (and promotion hopes?) was brought to an abrupt and conclusive end as they were well beaten by promotion-chasing Middlesbrough away on Saturday, although two late tries earned the battling Swans a four-try bonus point at least.
The corresponding home fixture saw Borough completely dismantle the Swans and up to half-time a similar outcome looked likely as the Tee-siders raced into a 29-0 lead, scoring four good tries. That score-line may have been a little unfair on Selby though as they played some pretty good stuff at times without reward and were always committed in defence – but Borough were just better, and with the Swans losing Jamie Ibbetson to a yellow card, and skipper Ash Parkinson to a nasty-looking ankle injury they took full advantage.
The half-time introduction of Henry Wright at fly-half brought a change in fortunes for Selby as Bob Robinson and George Stoker crossed to halve Borough’s lead; and then after another Borough try, Jamie Dentith and then Bruce Potter crossed in injury time to at least give some solace, and a bonus point, to cherish on the coach trip home.
So, some lessons to learn for the Swans and their exam will be on Saturday away at Goole, 3pm kick off – a tasty treat indeed!
