SELBY RUFC 57 – 12 ROUNDHEGIANS RUFC
What a day, it all started with a pre match dinner for sponsors & supporters & a good helping of steak pie and beer, and with the sun shining and the pitch in Wembley like condition the players took to the stage. League leaders Selby needed this to be a four in a row win and they didn’t come away disappointed.
Simply outclassed recently promoted Roundhegians struggled to match Selby’s game in every area of play even when Selby players felt they played at less than their best.
Winning several line outs and scrums against the head scoring 8 tries, with another adjudged to be short and several other opportunities lost, Roundhegians could only hang in there to manage the deficit. However Selby didn’t have it all there own way and a lack of focus left the door open in the second half for the visitors to pinch two tries.
The game was played at pace and with the ball being run from all areas of the pitch testing both side’s skills & tenacity. Clever kicking from Cruise and strong probing runs from Knowles, Webster, Clark & Lunt and good link play from Robinson & Porter caused havoc for the visitors back line.
Selby played most of the game on the front foot & in the oppositions half which gave opportunity for ball carriers Protheroe, Pocklington, Triffitt, Bell & Hardy to run the ball making good yards. As usual Blaymire (Man of the Match), Robinson, Wood & Brown snuffed out almost all visitor ambition to play the ball, and Selby tries came thick and fast.
At half time Selby were 24 -0 up with tries from Webster, Knowles & Porter, swiftly followed in the second half with tries from Greenfield, Webster, Protheroe, Lunt and Pocklington, with Cruise converting 7 tries and kicking a penalty.
