WEST LEEDS 28 V SELBY 22
NORTHERN DIVISION YORKSHIRE LEAGUE DIVISION 2.
Selby travelled to Leeds for their final league fixture, taking the opportunity to rest a couple of players, & to give a run out to a couple returning from injury ahead of Saturday’s crucial Yorkshire Shield semi- final against league champions, Barnsley.
In an entertaining game the goal kicking of West Leeds talented off half Dale Breakwell proved crucial with both sides scoring three tries, but Breakwell proving successful with a drop, two penalties & two conversions to stand in kicker Ben Booth’s two conversions.
Selby tries were claimed by Duncan Hardy, Martin Protheroe & Jay Robinson with Breakwell, Jamie Cockin & Nick Crouch replying for Leeds.
Fortunately the Swans came through the fixture with no further injuries apart from minor knocks to a couple of players.
The progress through to the semi has been impressive, with Scarborough from Yorkshire One the first victims when Selby recorded a fine victory 34- 29 at Sandhill Lane running in six tries in the process.
This season’s Yorkshire One league champions, Pocklington were next on the list, with the Swan’s showing no respect for their visitor’s status ripped up the form book & ripped into their opposition to record a stunning victory by 23 points to 10, with tries from Sam Weller & Alex Webster, both of whom, unfortunately will not be available for selection for the semi.
Alex received a serious injury with a ruptured spleen on his first introduction to the physicality of the game in New Zealand and Sam is still recovering from an injury which has seen him miss the last four games.
Yarnbury were next in line when Selby travelled to Horsforth still smarting from the previous week’s narrow loss against the same opposition, and despite going behind with the first try, they then walloped their hosts recording eight tries in the process of a stunning 57-22 victory.
The last meeting with Saturday’s visitors, Barnsley, saw the South Yorkshire side score a narrow 15-19 victory, with Selby left to rue a number of scoring chances, but proving to themselves that they have the talent and team spirit to test the champions.
There is great optimism in the Swan’s nest for this forthcoming game, and although second rows Karim Brown and Jason Hirst along with prop Tom Bell are still not available, Paul Gable, James Blaymire & Jay Robinson have returned to fitness to balance this loss.
With only a handful of games left throughout the leagues, a large crowd is expected to be at Sandhill Lane to bolster the happy band of faithful followers, all hoping to see the Swans fly into their seventh Yorkshire Shield final in their illustrious history, and with the second and fourth teams having early kick offs for their home games against Ilkley the support is expected to raise the noise levels a few decibels more.
