NORTHERN DIVISION YORKSHIRE LEAGUE DIVISION 2.

In their penultimate league game, the last of the season at Sandhill Lane, Selby entertained a large crowd with a seven try demolition of the opposition from Leeds, West Park Bramhope, who will still finish a place above the Swans despite this fine victory.
This was a comprehensive win, which would have been far greater had young Josh Cruise had his kicking boots on, as he was only able to slot two of the conversions & was similarly off target with a couple of penalties. He was, though, still at the centre of things, orchestrating this superb team effort with intelligent distribution & kicking, and displaying a fearless defence in centre field.
Once again the Selby pack was dominated in size by the opposition, but that was the only area of domination as this set of hardworking forwards comprehensively outplayed Park in every facet of the game, both in set play and in the loose, stealing ball all over the park, with Matty Wood outstanding, Brendan Lanaghan showing how far he has come inside a couple of seasons with his superb work ethic growing alongside the seemingly ageless Jason Cicero grafting for a full eighty minutes. It was , though No 8, Ben Booth who was the stand out forward, his display rewarded with two well taken tries, and his confidence growing by the minute with his extended first team run. The front row of Andrew Pocklington, Josh Green field, & Duncan Hardy also showed that they have the power to compete with any in the league & Greenfield will be missed during his sojourn in New Zealand, although skipper Paul Randell is a more than able replacement.
The experiment of playing full back, Dan Porter in the centre in place of the departing Alex Webster, met with only partial success, as this move denies him the space which he exploits so well in open field. Young scrum half, Jack Daniels showed that he has matured through a spell with the seconds with a solid display and wingman Ollie Saunders gave a brave defensive display, being pitted against a true speedster, the huge Gareth Phillips, who was largely bottled up & was restricted to just one try.
On the downside, a worry for the side were injuries to strong running centre Alex Arthur, improving prop Tom Bell and flanker Matty Wood, who join the recovering Sam Weller, Karim Brown, Jay Robinson & James Blaymire on the treatment table, & fingers are crossed that all will be available for selection for the semi against Barnsley in two weeks time.
Try scorers for Selby were : Lanaghan, Cruise, Butcher, Booth (2), Greenfield & Hardy, whilst Morgan, Phillips & McLure claimed those for WPL.
The last league game of the season sees the Swans travel once more when they take on West Leeds, and then comes the big crunch with the visit of league champions Barnsley to Sandhill Lane to contest the Semi Final of the Yorkshire Shield, & there is a quiet confidence in this tight bunch that they could just sneak into the final to take on either Pontefract or Bridlington from the league above.
