Selby travelled across to Scunthorpe for their away legg fixture in this league. Scunthorpe top of the table, Selby licking their wounds after a loss at Heath last time out. A late change for the Swans saw Antun Wilson coming in for Charlie Cicero and Liam Hogan on bench, in a side containing three Yorkshire under twenty squad members.
Selby started brightly as Wilson pounced on the loose ball at the first line out and Selby cleared over halfway. However, Scunthorpe quickly regained possession, spreading the ball wide to winger Lungsden, who sprinted down the touchline and scored under the posts. Stand-off Taylor's conversion gave Scunthorpe a 7-0 lead just three minutes in.
Henry Wright’s two long range kicks put pressure on the home side. Then came a pivotal moment in the game as Scunthorpe centre Murr was red carded after 15 minutes for a tip tackle and the Heslam Park side were down to fourteen.
The kick to the corner ensued but the line could not be breached as Selby attacked. A penalty under the posts was taken quickly and after a series of attacks it culminated in Hola Vea bulldozing his way over the line. Wright adding the extras from wide out to level the scores, 7 each.
Scunthorpe came straight back and a sustained assault on the line by their seven forwards saw them score a try by hooker Mason, again converted. A lengthy stoppage for a serious leg injury to a Scunthorpe player ensued.
Back on the attack, Selby’s Danny Wilkinson produced a nice loop and pass and as Selby pressed on, a high tackle was given in front of the posts which saw Wright reduce the deficit by three.
The first half ended with Selby stretched but a pass into touch left Scunthorpe's right winger fuming as the line beckoned and the whistle blew. Selby showing a lot of desire and certainly game-on against the table toppers.
The second half began with Selby enjoying a dominant period. Young hooker, Jack Todd, turned the ball over on half way. Not happy with that, he then broke left before Charlie Bramley ghosted in on his shoulder and tore all the way to the left hand corner to touch down. The conversion from wide out seeing Selby take the lead for the first time 17-14.
The pressure continued as the Greens kicked off. Max Wotton going on a devastating run before it was taken on by Hola, Townend, and Ibbetson in to the hosts 22. Both sides traded possession but Scunthorpe knocked on twice and Selby stayed camped up-field. The stalemate broke when Wilson charged down a clearance kick attempt and Selby quickly recycled to put Max Wotton over with a superb low drive, reminiscent of Duncan Hardy at the side of the posts. Wright converted and the Swans had a deserved 24-14 lead.
Ibbetson then received a yellow card for a no arms tackle and the hosts put the ball in the corner. The line out was taken in touch, but Scunthorpe pressed and were then held up over the line. A penalty in front of the posts was then taken quickly and Wilson was penalised for not retreating and joined Ibbetson on the sidelines. Scunthorpe then taking the three points through stand-off, Taylor.
Shortly after, Scunthorpe's right winger scored a converted try, levelling the match with 15 minutes to go, both sides wanting the win rather than a draw, albeit for different reasons. Selby determined; Scunthorpe making mistakes under pressure.
Play eventually ending up under the Selby posts. A knock-on by Scunthorpe allowed Selby to clear the danger with Adam Infante's long kick. Selby's fitness shone through as they overwhelmed Scunthorpe's defender and he was forced to hold on, earning a crucial penalty.
This was to be the last play of the match and from one meter in from the touchline, Wright lined up his kick at goal. As the Selby faithful held their breath, his clean strike hit the post, but fortuitously it stayed between the uprights, securing a dramatic 27-24 win for Selby. A deserved victory to savour from undoubtedly Selby's best performance of the season.
