A familiar looking Selby line up travelled west up the M62 to play Huddersfield at Lockwood Park. Just Alex Webster missing so Joe Scholefield fitting in at centre.
The hosts drew first blood scoring a try in the first 5 minutes, before Adam Infante replied for Selby with forwards and backs combining and he was put in at the corner by James Bramley. Henry Wright striking a good conversion and Selby Leading 7-5 after ten minutes.
A knock on by Selby, as they pressed on Huddersfield’s try line, was hacked the length of the field by the Huddersfield centre needing Joe Scholefield to race back to prevent a try. This was short lived, however, as Workman kicked a penalty after Selby infringed. The hosts received the ball back and the forwards then scored near the posts at the clubhouse end of the ground followed by a second both converted by Workman to see Huddersfield take a 22-7 lead and looking in control.
Selby came back and led by Jamie Ibbetson, who was making some excellent carries, made head way towards Huddersfield’s try line. In the home sides’ 22, most players were involved before eventually a penalty was given five metres from the try line for a high tackle . A quick tap by Paul Townend seeing him crash over dragging two defenders with him. A conversion by Wright the final score of the first half. The Swans having wind advantage in the second half on a pitch that looked suitable for a fast paced game rather than the mud bath of years gone by under the railway viaduct.
Sean Campbell replaced Tom Scholefield at the break, but it was Huddersfield who took control with two tries one of which was converted to put a clear gap between the sides. Campbell was then held up over the line for Selby as they attacked again. From the restart kick, Selby’s forwards returned up field before releasing the ball and the Bramley brothers combined to put Infante in for his second, with Wright converting.
Five minutes later and a similar effort from the visitors eight saw Ben Poskitt throw a dummy pass and slide over in the right hand corner for Selby’s fourth try. Unfortunately the conversion missed so Selby trailed by eight points.
The final eight minutes played out in the hosts half but Selby unable to get near the try line or win a penalty to close the gap.
One point for the four tries but Selby competitive throughout. Huddersfield’s online assessment complimenting the youthful and skill set of the Selby players. Huddersfield Match Report
