Selby edge a close hard fought game.

REGIONAL 2 NORTH EAST

SELBY RUFC 13 – 10 MORLEY RFC

Report by Garry Adamson

It is 21 years since Selby last played Morley, in a Yorkshire Cup Quarter Final, at Sandhill Lane which Selby won by 14 points to 11 – this game was the first time the 2 Clubs had met in a League fixture.

Morley kicked off into a stiff diagonal breeze with Selby awarded a penalty from the first scrum, which Selby would dominate for much of the game, with hooker Charlie Thompson taking a couple against the head. The Selby back line, with Jamie Francis making his debut and having a sound game throughout, handled the ball well taking the game into the Morley 22 – this early pressure from Selby was undone by conceding unnecessary penalties. Morley defended well with most of the play in their half of the pitch but against the run of play and in one of their first forays into the Selby 22, Morley took the lead with full back Noah Hawkins slotting a penalty for a 3 points to nil advantage after 22 minutes.

Selby kept up the pressure and were well on top, forwards and backs combining well – an excellent run by winger George Stoker took play into the Morley 5 metre – Selby continued to press and were awarded a number of penalties on the Morley 5 metre line where Selby chose to take scrums – eventually the pressure told with the Morley prop forward, George Huzcavitch, yellow carded – why Selby were not awarded a penalty try was a subject of great debate on the packed stand. Morley eventually cleared their lines with play then end to end before a quick tap penalty from scrum half Danny Wilkinson caught Morley offside – the resultant penalty, in the eighth minute of added on time, was converted by stand off Henry Wright to draw the scores level at 3 points apiece at the break.

The first 10 minutes of the second half saw end to end rugby and a real mid field tussle with both teams turning over possession on a regular basis. As the half wore on Morley gradually began to assert themselves with Selby put under real pressure but their defence held firm holding up the Morley forwards over the try line. On 50 minutes Selby scrum half Danny Wilkinson had to leave the field injured and as Selby only had 3 forwards on the bench, Ben Bell (playing his first game of the season) found himself in the centre with Archie Bennett moving from the wing to scrum half. Morley were having their best spell of the match and continued to apply pressure but the Selby defence held firm until a perfectly executed training ground move by the Morley backs resulted in winger Theo Tyrer scoring an excellent try under the posts after 63 minutes – the simple conversion by Hawkins put Morley back in front by 10 points to 3. This setback seemed to spur Selby on and only 8 minutes later they reduced their arrears after a successful catch and drive on the Morley 15 metre line followed by further phases of play saw flanker Harrison Green credited with his second try of the season – the difficult conversion was missed but Selby were very much back in the game dominating much of the territory and possession and were rewarded after 75 minutes when, after a number of attacking phases of play, number 8 Jamie Ibbetson crashed over in the corner to put Selby in front for the first time in the game by 13 points to 10. Despite further Morley pressure, and another 8 minutes of added on time, the Selby defence held firm with Selby emerging the winners in a tight hard fought game.

In the Clubhouse after the game there were rumours about the imminent arrival of 3 Kiwi brothers, 2 backs and 1 forward. These rumours were hastily quelled when their surname was clarified as Barry and not Barrett, grandsons of today’s match reporter Garry Adamson, who will be guesting for our mini/junior teams next Sunday.
