REGIONAL 2 NORTH EAST
Bridlington RUFC 22 – 17 Selby RUFC
Report by Andy Green
The young swans travelled to the Coast for a Regional 2 North east clash with Bridlington. With a good run of form shown by the Selby team over the last few weeks Selby’s travelling supporters were hoping for a close game against a team that were pushing for a top four finish.

With Bridlington getting the game underway, it wasn’t long before the home side got into their stride. Selby gave away an early penalty which enabled Bridlington to kick to the touch line to set up a strong set piece line out and maul, which finished with Bridlington hooker Joe Rowbottom crashing over for the first points of the game. The conversion was missed by Captain Sam Wragg which left the score at 5-0.

With the game still in the first ten minutes, a penalty was then awarded to Selby within Bridlington’s half. A good kick enabled the Selby forwards to set up for the line out within 20 meters of Bridlington’s touch line but unfortunately the throw from Thompson was deemed not straight by the match official and with a further penalty awarded to Bridlington, this gave the home team an easy get out.

The game moved into a scrappy period for Selby as they gave away two further quick penalties with in an 8-minute period which saw them defending within their own 22. Captain Jack Hebden was then shown a yellow card for what seemed like a harsh call from the Official for a further infringement. With Bridlington looking to extend their lead, Selby found themselves having to put up a strong defence with the disadvantage of been one man down. Fortunately, a turnover from Alex Webster offered some relief to the Selby side. The respite didn’t last for long however, and with a further yellow card given to Selby hooker Charlie Thompson, it wasn’t long before the Bridlington pack trundled their way back into the Selby 22. Now down to 13 players and having to make changes with Jamie Dentith replacing winger James Robinson to allow contested scrums, Selby found themselves desperately defending again but could not hold out and Bridlington’s number 8 wrecking ball Viliami Fangupo crashed over the Selby line close to the posts which made the conversion kick simple and stretching the score line to 12-0.

Selby found themselves having to make changes with James Hunt coming on and with Selby Captain Jack Hebden returning to the field after his sin-bin period, Selby’s spirit was somewhat lifted. It wasn’t long before they managed to work through some phases with strong carries from Max Wotton and Adam Leetham. This saw the ball move through the backs to the left wing, where Harry Cruise crossed over the Bridlington line but the Referee instantly reversed his initial decision and called no try on the grounds that the ball was held up. From the Bridlington goal line drop out Selby took possession and found themselves again able to put a few phases together which saw an opportunity for Charlie Bramley to skip through a tight gap and offload a difficult pass to brother James but unfortunately the ball went to ground only a short distance from the line. This enabled Bridlington to move their way down field and with a suspected forward pass they managed to send winger Max Towse over for their third try. The conversion was missed which took the score to 17-0.

The young Swans managed to get themselves back into the game, playing with a penalty advantage and with some excellent running and quick passing by Webster and James Bramley it eventually saw Cruise cross the Bridlington line and with a completed conversion kick gave Selby their first points of the day 17-7. Things were about to get better for Selby with the return of Thompson from his sin bin and after only a short period of play the Swans were awarded a penalty due to the Bridlington defence being caught offside. A kick to touch saw the Selby forwards taking the line out cleanly and mauling over the line for Thompson to touch down unfortunately the conversion was missed but taking the halftime score to 17-12.

The second half saw the introduction of George Stoker replacing full back Ruben Callau and Bruce Potter replacing James Hunt and with the game starting very much as the first had finished with some scrappy play from both teams and with the match official very much wanting to be involved, it wasn’t long before he awarded a penalty to Selby, followed by a yellow card to Bridlington’s number 7 Tom Gilson. Selby decided against the kick for 3 points and went to the corner only to lose possession allowing Bridlington to clear the danger. The game again went into a period of shared possession but with Selby pushing forward a clearance kick found touch within 25meters of Bridlington’s line. Bridlington’s line out throw was not straight awarding a scrum in favour of Selby and a solid scrummage by the Selby pack again rocked the heavy Bridlington pack and as Selby pushed through it put the Bridlington defence in a panic allowing Charlie Bramley to pick the ball form the base and dart over for a try, unfortunately the conversion attempt was missed making the score 17-17.

Bridlington from the restart lifted their game slightly but with some tired but determined defence by Selby, Bridlington could not break the advantage line until the last 5 minutes of the game. With the home team moving the ball quickly from a ruck on the left-hand side of the pitch through most of their back line Bridlington’s final pass even though voiced loudly from the travelling crowd was deemed not forward by the referee allowing play to continue and the winger to cross over with the conversion unsuccessful it put the score to 22-17 with only minutes remaining. Immediately from the kick off Selby were awarded a penalty as Bridlington were penalised for being off their feet at the ruck. Selby kicked for the corner and with the Selby forwards setting their maul in motion heading towards the Bridlington line with only seconds remaining and the try line 5 meters away Bridlington’s prop Hebron Tuialii looked from a distance to have brought the maul down illegally this was not recognized by the Referee who also decided that time was up and blew the full-time whistle with the score line finishing 22-17 to Bridlington.

Selby sit comfortably in eighth position in the division and with an away fixture this weekend against Pocklington followed by an away and home fixture against Dronfield Selby hope to improve on their final standing as the season ends.
