YORKSHIRE SHIELD SEMI FINAL
Selby maintained their recent run of good form and duly swept aside their Yorkshire 2 opponents from West Leeds to storm into the final of the Yorkshire Shield for the fourth time in their history.
Selby started the game full of confidence and were two converted tries up, by Dan Porter & Alex Arthur, within the first ten minutes, and a rout looked on the cards, but the Leeds team hit back to level the scores with tries from Neave & Merritt to bring the Swans back down to earth.
Sandhill Lane, though has become the place to see some exciting rugby and some exciting young players, none more so than man of the match Alex Webster who was next to cross followed by Dan Porter claiming his second, then Chris Quinn added to his tally of four conversions with a penalty, to close the half at 31-14.
The second half disintegrated a little as the players battled with a greasy ball & pitch, a biting cold wind, and a chilling rain that had no excuse to be around on a May evening.
West Leeds did their best to spoil the party as well with a dogged defensive effort and never say die attitude that did their club proud.
With Selby always on top in the forwards and prop Andrew Pocklington running & passing like a threequarter there was though no way back for the visitors and the classy Webster closed the scoring with a well worked team try.
The final will take place at Driffield RUFC on Wednesday, 19th May 2010, kick-off 6:45 p.m. , against Bridlington RUFC, and it is likely that a bus will be organised.
It would be a great way to end the season if all supporters could do their utmost to be there to shout the Swans to a famous victory.
