Selby storm to Semi with eight try victory

YARNBURY 22 SELBY 57
YORKSHIRE SHIELD QUARTER FINAL.

MINUTE BY MINUTE.
REFEREE: MR. DAVID HICKSON – EAST YORKSHIRE SOCIETY.

Selby stormed into the semi-finals of the Yorkshire shield with this stunning victory against a strong Yarnbury outfit, in a game which saw the Swans display all their talents in racking up eight tries, eight goals & 57 points in a delightful variety of ways, with all 19 players adding to the mix and the points shared between forwards & backs, who throughout played selflessly for each other.
With a good following of supporters travelling from Sandhill Lane setting up roars of support which at times even drowned out the competing roar of the constant flow of planes flying in & out of the nearby Leeds & Bradford Airport, Selby were pumped up for action, encouraged by skipper Paul Randell & notched up by the two youngsters, Alex Webster & Josh Greenfield who were playing their last game before departing to the land of the Long White Cloud.
It was the men from Leeds, though who started the stronger, but their young off half Pound was off target with a couple of early penalties, but his team took an early lead when a couple of missed tackles saw hooker Bowden score near the posts to give Pound his first points.
This sparked Selby into action & with full back Dan Porter proving just too hot to handle all the game, his was the final pass which saw a wave of attacks culminate with the returning James “ Blaze” Blaymire forcing over and No 10 Josh Cruise levelled the score with the conversion.
Porter then sparked another score putting the fleet footed Webster over, but it was suggested that the visitors had upset the referee as a series of penalties kept Yarnbury in the game.
Nothing though could dampen the exuberance of the rampant Swans & winger Ben Lunt collected a loose kick & & scorched straight down centre field for a sensational score, and big Jason Cicero then stormed under the posts and Porter’s kick put the half time score to 10-28.

A long Cruise penalty then extended the score and as attacks sparked from all over the field superb strength & determination saw flame haired centre Alex Arthur force over.
A lapse in concentration then allowed winger Gomersall to pull back a try for the home side, but with the ball being switched back & forth across the pitch Porter pulled five points straight back.
Yarnbury were fighting to regain their pride & centre Avison took advantage of some slack tackling for a score converted by Pound, but wave after wave of attacks from Selby followed as first Arthur went in for his second and the biggest cheer of the day was for the final score by replacement winger Kev Lamb as he finished a move involving most of the side.
The pace & power of the visitors backs was just too much for the opposition to handle, with scrum half Jack Daniels proving a key link, but the intensity & work rate of their forwards set the platform for the backs to run. With prop Tom Bell hitting the line to match co prop Duncan Hardy, second row Brendan Lanaghan popping up all over the field, Matty Wood & Blaymire showing what the club has been missing in the back row for most of the season & No 8 Ben Booth showing that he is a quality footballer, this team has the ability to claim this trophy this season. Substitutes Ollie O’Brien, Mark Toye & Josh Greenfield all added their mark to the game

The final league game to be played at Sandhill Lane this season sees West Leeds as the visitors, & it is hoped that the Swans can raise their game once again for their faithful supporters.
