An early start but a bright sunny day for Sandal Girl’s Festival. There was a great turnout from girls of all ages and Selby Under 18s joined forces with Doncaster and Thorne.

Selby U18’s first game against Old Crossleyans gave a promising start to the day. Attack was forthcoming from both teams with Old Crossleyans prevailing by two tries to none. Selby grew stronger as the game went on but due the twelve-minute games, we didn’t fully get into our stride. However, it built confidence in the team as we entered our next match with old rivals - Sandal.

The second match of the day against Sandal showed marked improvement for the Selby ladies from the last few times we have played them. Each time our teams are pitched against each other we perform stronger, which gives us hope that one day soon we will come out on top. Our strong defence restricted Sandal to two tries but denied them the strong victories they have had in the past.

Selby raised their game once again in their third match of the day against Ashfield. This game was more evenly pitched allowing Selby to score the first two tries of the day by Jemma Fieldsend and Charlotte Carter which was matched by an equivalent score by Ashfield. Unfortunately, this game was dogged by injury with two of our team having to leave the pitch with ankle and knee injuries. The match was curtailed early by a nasty injury sustained by a Thorne player, who was taken to hospital with a broken leg. All of us wish our team mates a speedy recovery and hope to see them again soon.

Our final match against Moortown rewarded us with our only victory of the day. The Selby ladies improved their performance with tries from Annie Campbell (Doncaster), Isobel Stevens and Harriet Baker-Csordas against a scoreless Moortown leading to a convincing victory.
As a team, our communication is improving all the time. Our defence is strengthening and allowing us to push the other teams back. We are beginning to use space more effectively enabling us to become braver in our attack.
