Positive start to Selby Lady Pens’ By Paul David

Sunday saw the start of the rugby season for Selby RUFC u18s Ladies. Sandhill Lane hosted Ryton (from Newcastle) and Pontefract, in fun packed afternoon of engaging rugby. The ladies had trained hard over the summer alongside the RFU o2 touch program with coaching from Paul David and Will Stoker (both qualified and experienced coaches) and this paid dividends on the pitch.

Selby ladies allowed the visiting teams to play each other first, in a hard fought match it was Ryton that came out on top at the final whistle. After a short break, Selby took to the field with a full 15 players and a few on the bench, eager to start. The match showed that ladies rugby is strong in Selby with supporters cheering them on. The ladies played with passion and determination, showing skills that would rival any lads game. Strong defensive work kept the score low, but ultimately Ryton were able to end the game as winners, having a team that have played together for a number of years and fielding several potential England players.

Pontefract were next to face Selby in the last game of the afternoon with extra support from the Ryton girls, this could be called a local Derby as they are only down the road. The match started well with Selby ladies in control, but Pontefract were able to out muscle them every time Selby got close to crossing the line. Indeed, half way through the match, the scores were still 0-0. It was only in the last quarter that Pontefract crossed the line for their first try. This was followed quickly by another try while Selby were caught out numbered on the wing after strong defending and counter rucking. Selby fought back with some great support play and managed to go over for their first try of the season. The match ended in a victory to Pontefract but the true winner of the afternoon was ladies rugby. Karen Ratcliffe commented that “the ladies loved every minute of the afternoon, they have continued to develop on and off the pitch and are looking forward to the season ahead.”

Selby u18 girls have teamed up with Doncaster, Thorne and Malton girls to create a full team of ladies ready to play a great season of rugby.

If you would like to try out and experience the rugby family, then come down on a Wednesday evening at 7.00 pm and give it a go.

Kind regards

Paul David
