Selby v Baildon Yorkshire Cup Match

The 5th November brought a sparkly performance from Selby Girls Under 18s with their first home match of the season against Baildon. The two teams were evenly matched with Baildon having older and taller girls matched by Selby Girls’ agility and teamwork on the pitch. Selby welcomed the return of Jenny Wood after a long-term absence due to injury. In the first half, there were numerous strong runs by Ellie Naylor and Beth Cullip and Selby were able to repeatedly break through Baildon’s defences. Jemma Fieldsend had a strong game scoring a try in the first half but had to leave the pitch with an injury after 25 minutes (although returned to the pitch in the second half). Baildon scored a try followed shortly by another with a conversion. Katie Rucklidge scored the second try for Selby, leaving the score 12-10 to Baildon at the end of the first half.

Baildon started the second half a player down due to a yellow card for a number of high tackles. After a 50 yard run, Jemma scored her second try but missed the conversion. Baildon scored their third try with a conversion at 45 minutes. Hannah West, who consistently plays well, sustained a knee injury and good sportsmanship was shown by a Baildon player who attended to her although the game was still in play.
The final score was Selby 15 - Baildon 26. An encouraging match which Selby could easily have won. Though tiring towards the end, Selby girls need to keep their eye on the ball and the opposition at all times.

Next week, we play West Park Leeds in a cup match at their home ground.
