When the Selby Pens U18 girls squad took to the pitch at Sandal RUFC in their first full match of the season on Sunday 1st October, they were depleted in numbers due to the Yorkshire Trials. This gave an opportunity for the newer squad member to step up and show what they could do. They were joined by coaches Mike Parsonage and Mark Tanner as they faced their first stern test.
The start of the first half was encouraging and they retained possession well, the team were close to scoring on a couple of occasions but they were kept off the score board by a strong Sandal defense. Sandal then moved up a gear and took full advantage of their superior off loading skills. Selby stuck to their task and two well worked tries were scored by Isobel Stevens and visiting ‘player of the match’ Liv Kasza with the final score of 10-40.
It's fair to say the girls are looking forward to a rematch in 2 weeks time when they will be back in Wakefield with a full squad and a score to settle in the Yorkshire Cup.
Next up, a trip to the seaside as they play in an East Coast festival at Scarborough!
