Selby Pens' u18s First Fixture of the Season

The Selby Pens new U18’s squad gathered on a sunny, late September Sunday afternoon at Hull Ionians for their first matches of the season. The development festival was well attended with teams from Scarborough, Malton and Hull Ionians. The Selby team was well represented with 17 players turning out in their new kit sponsored by Read School.
Their first match was against Scarborough, the first half saw Selby defending and their tackling was robust and vastly improved on last season. Neither side were able to break through and the first 15 minutes ended scoreless. Quick reactions from Scarborough allowed them to score soon after the restart, taking advantage of a turnover and their second try came in similar fashion. Selby weren’t about to give up and the battled on to score a well worked try finished off by a fine run by Jemma Fieldsend ending the game 5-10.
The next match, Scarborough versus a combined team from Malton and Hull Ionians with Selby players stepping up to complete the team.
Selby then played their last match against a combined team from Malton, Hull Ionians and Scarborough, after going behind in the early stages the girls battled back to a very creditable 15 all drawn with tries from from Ellie Green, Charlotte Carter and Ellie Naylor.
The team has gelled well after their summer break and they are looking forward to their game next week against Sandal. Well done girls
