Selby RUFC’s junior girls are back in action – and the U16s kicked off their season in style. With a 24-strong squad, several players in county contention, and the Yorkshire Cup to defend, the team looks set for another exciting campaign.
On a sunny afternoon at Sandhill Lane, Selby welcomed Beverley, with several Selby girls even pulling on Beverley shirts to cover injuries and keep the game competitive. That generosity didn’t slow the hosts down, as Selby stormed to a 12-try, six-conversion victory.
There were standout performances across the pitch. Charlotte Riley dazzled with four tries, while India Unsworth’s quick feet brought her two of her own. Mollie Boulton powered over from No. 8, and Lucy Force – who also touched down – impressed in both attack and defence to earn MVP. Lilly Sykes shone with crunching tackles, while Anya Marsham steered the second half superbly from fly-half. Erin McClusky distributed neatly from scrum-half, and Izzy Tasker was dominant in the lineout.
Debutants also made their mark: Emmi Buckle and Maisie Fenton worked hard in the front row, and Isla Rose showed real confidence on her first outing.
Credit goes to Beverley, who are still developing as an U16 side but showed great spirit and fight throughout. For Selby, it was a performance full of promise, with plenty to build on for the season ahead.
Special thanks to the coaches, first aiders, our new sponsors Rainbow IT – and of course all the girls who played for both sides. Selby RUFC continues to welcome new players of all ages, no experience needed.
