It’s a landmark afternoon for Selby U18 Girls as they face Northern FC in the Regional Cup semi-final, with a place in the regional final at stake.
The girls reached this stage after competing in a three-team pool (rather than the usual four), playing just two matches. A narrow three-point defeat to Sandal was followed by a convincing win over West Park Leeds, which proved enough to secure a place in the knockout stages. Having just missed out on progression in the National Cup, the squad now find themselves in the Regional Cup semi-final, run under the same rules and made up of pool runners-up.
This is believed to be Selby’s first ever U18 Girls Regional Cup semi-final, a fantastic achievement in itself. The competition covers a huge area — from Mansfield right up to Scotland — highlighting the scale of today’s challenge.
Selby go into the match with limited availability, despite full squad sizes being permitted, and face an unknown opponent in Northern FC, whom they have never previously played. With little form to go on, today is likely to be a tough, competitive contest, requiring focus, resilience and belief.
A win today would see the girls progress to the Regional Final — an incredible opportunity. Fingers crossed they can rise to the occasion and make a bit more history. Best of luck to the squad — enjoy every minute.
